Grits and Collards

BBQ is not all about the meat. Earlier this week, inspired by the Dinosaur, I made cheese grits and red pepper collards. There is not much to either. You just have to cook the hell out of the collards and grits are pretty much cream of wheat that you don't put maple syrup on.
Dinosaur BBQ And Back

So we did go with friends to Syracuse for a Dinosaur BBQ experience. I had the sweetheart special for two - a side of ribs, four sides and corn bread - with just me me because I get along so well I can't believe it. The place was hopping and a blast on a late Saturday afternoon. I picked up a long …
You Need Corn Bread

It is as simple as that. If you are to make ribs and coat them and soak them and let them come into their glory over six hours at 250º F., you should also make one of those thick savory batter corn breads that you pour in a greased pan and pull out just before setting the table. Mine includes …
Relative Hysteria

It's getting nutty. Nut-tay. Even if gas were to go to $2.00 a litre (or $6.50 a US gallon in USD) it would just add about 20 bucks to my average weekly spending. Meanwhile, there was a fantastic sale on side ribs at A+P and I got a hefty feed for Saturday - 3.5 kg or 8 lbs for 15 bucks. I need to …

An experiment today. We have had many experiments with BBQ ribs around here but our eldest is mad for pulled pork and, surprisingly, ribs are actually one of the most expensive cuts of meat going. So today is pulled pork day chez nous for under seven bucks. To the right you will see the wee beast …
Again At Ralph's Ribs, Ithaca, New York

As you know, I became obsessed with BBQ ribs over the last few summers. It appears to be something that Canadians just can't do right - let's be honest. It takes time and plenty and a certain capacity to accept that what you are eating is not high on the Canada Food Guide. We like those Bill …

As you can guess, I liked our visit last week to Ithaca. We added two days to summer holidays there in a few weeks to do some more exploring and that is going to include a return trip to the Farmer's Market as well as Ralph's Ribs. • The photos are pretty self-descriptive but suffice it to say …
What To Do With A Dog Day

Mini-putt by City Hall • On the upside, there are always ribs and my lunch on Saturday was a share of a side and a pull pork sanny on the lawn in front of work. • I am still a little unsure about the morality of the Titanic kiddy slide having passed the graves of the dead in north-end Halifax …
The First Ribs of Summer 2005

There is something about ribs. • I bought three top notch sides from the Hind Quarter cut off the neghbouring related anatomy before me, a good thick cap left on from the seam of meat - that bit that becomes the pork chop if cut laterally rather than longitudinally. Sure it was forty-two bucks …
I Have Seen The Lord...

...or at least have seen where he works out back in the kitchen: the Beale Street BBQ. The best BBQ I have had to date and sixty three bucks stuffed three adults and three kids - a third of which was for me. The BBQ sampler for $17.99 gets you a half of ribs, smoked chicken quarter, pulled pork …
