Is there a lazier day than Victoria Day. First it celebrates nothing we much like any more - social frigidity and colonial empire. Then there is that honest truth that for most of the Canadians out there, you have hungover. May 2-4 and all that. God has even blessed us with a rainy day so there is no chance of the threat of garden work being foisted upon me. What happened in the last week in sports?
- The Yankees are really bad. Remember how they said Joe Torre wasn't much of a manager? Remember how they pay Jason Giambi - he of the golden thong - enough each year to buy a small fleet of commercial jetliners so that they can have the benefit of his .191 average and his glittering defense? Swept by the Mets at home.
- The Penguins are through to the finals of the Stanley Cup. If the Red Wings get there, too, I may watch a game or two.
- The Syracuse Orange are in the final four of NCAA lacrosse. I have no idea why we can't get NCAA lacrosse on Canadian TV, it being on of the finest expressions of our national game. Likely some big Western Canadian conspiracy to keep it out. How else do you explain televised CFL?
- Speaking of the CFL, there is little in the way of news other than an group trying to put together yet another failing franchise in Ottawa. Loony news about the CFL from the Canadian Senate as well.
- Three weeks until the Watertown Wizards start play.
