Yawn. Never heard of Kathy Sierra. Never heard of Tim O'Reilly. I have never even heard of the "blogger Ms Sierra described as 'far more prominent than me'." Time to remember no one really cares or should really care about blogs - for good reason. But pump up the non-issue and - WHAMMO! - conference fees go crazy.
Remember: you are hearing is from a prominent blogger. Send $29.95 for further details and my plan for the future.

I guess what these people want is some sort of mirror of the comics code of authority ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comics_Code .. a laughable "we won't be offensive or rude" stamp on your page.. guh.. slay me. It is self imposed censorship. Have these daisy chain making sissies never heard of Statcounter or Slander and/or Libel laws? They are the sort that become parents and take over a minor sport or PTA and turn it in to a pretend fluffy happy utopian ideal that drives the real people elsewhere to live happier, freer existences. Bah.. I'd call them worse but I self regulate my insults on other people's sites..

I hope you are not making fun of section 163(1)(b) of the Criminal Code of Canada:<blockquote class="smalltext"> 163(1) Every one commits an offence who...<p>(b) makes, prints, publishes, distributes, sells or has in his possession for the purpose of publication, distribution or circulation a crime comic.</blockquote>We need to be controlled in these matters.<p>I'm...so..scared...

Offensive and rude is one thing, threatening rape and death is another altogether.

Obviously but what is your point? I can be seen to have been threatened over the last four years loads of times in one way or another in comments which have deleted but I thought, given the source, that they were morons with no capacity to do anything about it. Those sorts of comments are all over the place as the web is a wallowing ground of the banal, creepy and unlike me.

On the one hand, there is some over-reaction going on, but on the other hand, I don't think we should make light of it. There's also a whiff of misogyny about it, which muddies the waters. I'm thinking it all ties in to the public/private aspect of the web - while some have their information out there for all to see, others can hide behind the anonymity.

There is no slight over reaction, there is a purposeful misdirection into the realm of the speakers tour. If it was a real problem you go to the police. Having experienced and been exposed to real issues in my job, these sorts of threats are sadly pervasive in our society. The police and courts handle them but you do not get speakers fees that way.
Plus there is no private aspect to the web. If I spent about five minutes I would be able to identify you, for example, and there would be no legal problem with me doing that. It is mere courtesy.
