With the apparent departure of Bernie Williams, Mariano Rivera has become the senior Yankee in length of service. At the Yankees’ spring training complex in Tampa, Fla., he seemed to display a sense of mortality yesterday about his own playing career. Rivera, 37, regarded by many as the greatest closer in baseball history, will be paid $10.5 million this season, the option year of a two-year contract. He is eligible to become a free agent after the season, and Rivera seemed to be suggesting yesterday that anything was possible. “I want to finish my career here,” he said. But, he added, if the Yankees did not “give me the respect that I deserve,” he would contemplate moving on.All of the sudden, withe Bernie Williams out something of the tradition of loyalty may have gone with him. Excellent.

makes me kinda sad. i admire them. i like playing ibm. it wouldnt be near as much fun beating them if they were all messy and in disarray like us. they have the death star. we have the force.
