Canny readers will recall I am a fan of the Greenock Morton, despite having only seen them once and not having certainty that I will ever watch them live again. I do not write much about them as one has the sense that by writing about them you contribute to the conspiracy of the gods against them. Yet...there are days you can be confident that the team does its best to ensure its own fate:
Morton 0-4 Ayr UnitedOh dear. Last week it was a 0-0 draw against even more lowly Alloa. So here I am again: Morton well-placed (six points up from third place with six games to go) to get up to the First Division (really the second division) with then a hope - however theoretical - of being one good season out of the Premiership where they once dwelt with teams like Rangers and Celtic...teams with names some of you might actually recognize. Once again I will privately care a little too deeply, unpack and look at the greatest collection of Morton memorobilia in eastern Ontario if not eastern Canada, maybe put on a blue and white hooped shirt on a Saturday on the off chance that they will win the game. A sure sign of spring.Substitute Gareth Wardlaw grabbed a brace as lowly Ayr recorded an emphatic win over promotion contenders Morton at Cappielow Park...

To lose at home in the circumstances is bad enough, but I sympathise deeply with you given that it was "The Scum" who beat you. Still, you are well placed for promotion, 6 points clear with a game in hand.

We heard a rumour from a cousin in Greenock that there was a playoff for promotion from the second to the first. Is there any truth to that?
