All of a sudden, Kicking Horse Coffee from British Columbia is on sale here in Kingston. Organic, fair trade, shade grown and even Calgary kosher - there are more logos on this package than...on something with lots of logos.
It is very good. Glistening beans. Other places we had tried recently after this post last month sold us beans as dry as...very dry things. Not good. It is the oils that make the coffee - like most things.
Not cheap at around fourteen bucks a pound but most coffee is sold in half or three-quarter pounds and the rainforest is actually replanted so the warblers we see in summer have some place to go for the winter. Lowest prince so far seen? Produce Town on Bath.

Up the snobbery a notch by roasting your own beans.
Buy a used $5 electric popcorn popper (Popcorn Pumper works well) and a pound of Organic Shade Grown Fair Trade green beans. Dump a half cup of beans into the popper and place wet paper towels in a large bowl to catch the chaff that blows out of the popper. Five minutes in the popper will produce a dark roast.
Little spalls will split off the bean when it's dark roasted. You'll see similar bits in the bottom of the Kicking Horse bag. Dump the roasted beans into a colander to cool off and then grind them up (hand grinder) for the freshest cup of coffee this side of the Rockies. Or just say to hell with it and make a cup of instant in the microwave.
