It has been years since I read Shoeless Joe Jackson or The Natural. In my pre-winter planning, I am thinking of taking on sports books, fiction and non-fiction. Any recommendations?
Later: Picked up the 2004 edition of The Thinking Fan's Guide To Baseball.

I'd recommend the other WP Kinsella book, "The Iowa Baseball Confederacy". I liked it.

Any of the classic Peter Puck series, although the rules have certainly changed. 8-]

The Nick Hornby one - "Fever Pitch". "Fathers, Sons and Football" by Colin Schindler (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0747232253/ref=pd_sr_ec_ir_b/202-5120128-8739040)
shows the differences between three generations of professional footballers all from the same family - Mike Summerbee, his dad and his son all played professional soccer and all had different experiences.

i think the two you mentioned are dreadful books. hey, just my opinion. i'd say the sporting life (a real classic about a broken nose), fever pitch (which you've already read) and, my fav, an odd book by robert coover - hard to find - called "the universal baseball association -henry j. waugh owner." essays by roger angell too - "the summer game" - plus i got a copy of the red sox reader i could send you. the early bill lee stuff is beautiful, just beautiful.

I have that Sox reader, I think...maybe there are 137 Red Sox readers. I need to set out my sports book library as only you know I have read Fever Pitch and I should not send Steve in Manchester in the wrong direction. Fever Pitch was great in its presentation of an extreme relationship that I think is different from the extreme relationship between fans and North American sports.
