That's a good point. There may be an association of personal freedom with Protestantism, which gets translated as an association with Christianity. The ideal of individual freedom in the West came most out of countries like England, Scotland and the Netherlands, and less so from more Catholic countries like France, Italy and Spain. It was this Protestant ideal that formed the basis of the political culture in the U.S. (just a theory)

I read my Boethius a couple of years ago, btw; and I'm a Lapsed R.C., just for the record.
