This is the great soccer player playing today, Thierry Henry of Arsenal. I watched the 1-1 derby draw against Charlton this morning on Fox Sports World Canada (Canada's best TV station if you like soccer, rugby and cricket). His free kick (Ed.: not as illustrated) curling in from five yards outside the box was the best I have ever seen. The top spin was so great it looked like the ball went under the goalie's outstretched mitt; forget Beckham - he'd need another five yards out to make the goal. Charlton, from another part of London, is one of the sides you can admire even though they are not your team - ever since Jensen made a fool of ManU's Rio Ferdinand last year, turning him inside out as he blew by him to score. Clean tough team that brings out the best in Arsenal, something that is not necessarily a weekly event. The BBC's match report is here.

That was a loverly one as well, Arthur. Was it the last of total football?
I correct myself. Watching Henry on the highlights show this evening, it is clear the ball was inside the top of the penalty spot circle so he was 2 to 3 yards from the top of the box. The economy of motion was another astounding aspect fo the goal. Like Lemieux without being built like a Volvo.

I think so. I haven't seen a decent football game from the Dutch team (except for the one against Argentinia, can't remember the score, but Bergkamp was almost as brilliant).

Heh. A Volvo is still tons better than a DAF :-)
