You know there are times when you have to give the freakishly paranoid conservative panic movement a nod. You know when they say things like the nation is lost, the US is under socialist invasion, that eating your vegetables is a communist plot... well, note this out of Geneva from a couple of weeks ago:
A top UN official has condemned as "inadmissible" Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's call for a jihad, or holy war, against Switzerland. "Such declarations on the part of the head of state are inadmissible in international relations," said Sergei Ordzhonikidze, the UN chief in Geneva. Col Gaddafi criticised a Swiss vote against the building of minarets and urged Muslims to boycott the country.
...and compare it to this out of Washington now:
The US state department has apologised for comments made about Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi's call for jihad against Switzerland. Department spokesman PJ Crowley, who made the dismissive comments, said they did not reflect US policy and were not intended to offend. Col Gaddafi had criticised a Swiss vote against the building of minarets and urged Muslims to boycott the country. Mr Crowley described it as "lots of words, not necessarily a lot of sense."
Really? Do you really really have to apologize for that? Granted Switzerland is one of the most conservative Western countries and Gaddafi is a conservative authoritarian so it is no wonder that the pinkos in charge of the White House get a little confused but... really? You really need to apologize for that?

Come now, Alan. We couldn't expect Gadhafi to be happy with the State Department giving $400k to his children's foundations.
I mean, it wasn't like he actually declared a jihad against Switzerland... oh wait, he _did_.
As for the UN's more vigorous response -- this threatened the tranquility of their European offices. Geneva's a nice city. Won't be nearly so pleasant to be in if people wage jihad against it.
About what the original State Dep't spokesman (Crowley) said -- well, isn't it inherently funny, the idea of someone declaring jihad against Switzerland? I mean, it's like the Flashman Papers' description of the opening days of the Crimean War -- "Okay, we're at war with Russia. What now?"
