I know. I know. They are just getting my hopes up. The idea of a 2009 election makes so little sense that it would just be that much more fun. But to have one over EI when the economy may be turning around earlier than expected? Maybe one day we will call this "the swine recession" but that is not how Iggy sees it:
Stephen Harper dismissed opposition demands for changes to employment insurance yesterday, setting the Prime Minister on a collision course that could lead to a summer election. Rising for the first time in the House of Commons since the Liberal Party officially confirmed his leadership over the weekend, Michael Ignatieff demanded a national standard of 360 hours of work to qualify to receive benefits under the federal assistance program.
Collision course? More like bumper cars given our recently invented incessant obsession with voting. There was a time in this fair land that you got an election every four years or so. Majorities were won and people got on with governing and being governed. And this idea of an election makes no sense to two players necessary to the equation - the NDP and the Bloc. Given they are assured of losing seats to Iggy and the Grits, what is in it for them to bounce Harper now or anytime in the next few years? None. Look, I will be happy to see it happen but I think we are looking at 2011 before we get a chance to vote again Federally. By that time - who knows? Harper, Layton and Gilles may all be gone and Iggy can have another coronation.
You know, with that sort of thinking Flaherty could be another Kim Campbell, a four month PM before the Tories get whalloped.
