I think it is safe to say that there was never a ban on using a typewriter while driving a car. I don't think one was needed. But why is there any question that banning texting behind the wheel:
The first study of drivers texting inside their vehicles shows that the risk sharply exceeds previous estimates based on laboratory research — and far surpasses the dangers of other driving distractions. The new study, which entailed outfitting the cabs of long-haul trucks with video cameras over 18 months, found that when the drivers texted, their collision risk was 23 times greater than when not texting.
Of course it was! And the study also showed that painting 89% of the windows of truck cabs made the danger 22 times worse. What is it about new toys that make people so dumb about them. I was watching someone walk, talk on a cell phone the other day as they tried to cross at the lights and and the result was bizarre. The person was clearly conflicted as to which task required attention. Is it just because of miniaturization? Or is it that people make the iPod, the cell phone and the camera pervasive in their lives since they replicate and mask one's real life so well?
I say pass a law making no such device smaller than a loaf of bread. Problem solved.

I'm always impressed - as I whiz by on the bus - at ladies curling their eyelashes, applying eyeliner and such like while doing 80 kph. Never mind the danger, the result must be horrendous.
