You have to look at how it actually operated at the time.

What??? No, you have to look at what the words meant at the time. You have leapt into the murky waters of deference of interpretation. It is one thing to interpret words as they were understood at the time, it is another to accept interpretation.

Stephen Colbert cleared up the oath thing last night. Apparently the way it went down Yo Yo Ma is now the president and his cello is the Vice President.

I had no idea the word-for-word text of the oath was actually proscribed in the Constitution - so at least I learned something out of all this inanity.
