Jay has finally done what a thousand bloggers before have pledged: he is creating a political party. Sure, it's a one issue party but is it good to start small, take baby steps. For those who don't know or haven't cared, the Plan B Party is about a section of the Human Rights Code which permits complaints over hate speech. Look, I am against hate speech as the next guy but I think it is a criminal matter tied to an actual wrong having occurred, not something that even the best intentioned of human rights appointees working within an administrative law structure not of their making can handle. And this sort of hate speech is so low level it inevitably clashes with principles of freedom of speech - which includes the right to offend. Plus I am from Church of Scotland stock. We get out the lawn chairs and ice tea to watch any splintering schismists that come through town. Which leads to the point that this is the beginning of the wave of conservatives eating conservatives that is, you know, so vital to the national interest. Finally, Jay is a big supporter of good political blogging with the emphasis on good. So, this makes sense in a lot of ways.
All together, these things demand some serious consideration. So what do you think? Is this good? Should PM Harper do what he does best and capitulate right after saying he will never capitulate? Or do you support hate speech as a ground for a human rights complaint and think the chill on freedom is overblown? Will you download the form and sign up for Plan B? Here is the form. You can mail it to Jay at Plan-B, 2313 Cranmore Road, Oak Bay, BC V8R 1Z5

Nah, I already belong to the best fringe protest party around. Woo!
...On the one hand, I am glad to see the more sensible elements of the right turning on their neoconservative power-over-people overlords. On the other hand, single issue activism has always really bugged me. There are so many people who have their Thing and won't stop talking about it and refuse to accept that things have a context that my first reaction to plan B was a resounding "eugh."

I'm all for Jay's Plan B Party!!! I agree almost 100% with all the stuff he has been writing about Human Rights Commissions and hate speech. Yes, I too am against hate speech but prefer the Criminal Law as the mechanism to deal with it. Human Rights Commissions are for employers and landlords and such. Plus, I love the idea of urging/blackmailing Harper's into putting its money where its mouth is. If the CPC is going to be the party on the right, then F*#KING act that way! Don't just mouth platitudes and expect your support base to follow along in the hopes of this "incremental conservatism" B.S. that never seems to come. Same with Senate reform! I'm by no means a Harper supporter but I do like deomocracy and individual rights and freedoms. More of it is great!

Don't worry Renee, the great thing about a single issue party is you can only disagree once...
Thanks for the link Alan, and the endorsement Hans. I think "urge" is the word of choice, blackmail is such an ugly word.
