This is good. Good stuff, too. Immigration Minister Jason Kenney working with PEN and even author John Ralston Saul, honorary patron of PEN and husband of former governor-general Adrienne Clarkson to get a political dissident out of China and into Canada:
Mr. Kenney issued a special ministerial permit – just the second of its kind since the Conservatives took office in 2006 – that will allow Mr. Jiang to live and work in Canada for two years. During that time he can apply to become a permanent resident. After confirming with Ms. Li that her husband still wanted to come to Canada, the minister signed the permit, which was transmitted to the Canadian embassy in Beijing, prompting Mr. Jiang's daring journey. Without that document, it could have taken years for Mr. Jiang to immigrate through normal channels.
Mr. Jiang ratted on corrupt local politicians and so is a welcome addition to the way of maple. I hope they include Dudley Do-right cartoons in the cultural enrichment education program he must now undergo before they give him his tartan rat jacket and Tim Horton's travel mug. Not quite my favorite guy but up there as far as people standing up to the tyrant goes. Well done, Jason Kenney.

Thanks be to God I didn't know that. I couldn't have sustained the gushy feelings of that moment.
