How? By naming former Duke basketball player Greg Paulus as their QB for the upcoming season:
After one week of summer camp, Syracuse head coach Doug Marrone has named Duke transfer student Greg Paulus as the team's starting quarterback, according to a press release issued by SU Athletics late Monday night. Paulus had been competing for the job against redshirt freshman Ryan Nassib - who was named the starting quarterback by Marrone in the Spring - and gets the nod nearly three weeks before the team's first game against Minnesota at the Carrier Dome on September 5.
Why should you care? First, Syracuse has sucked and has been picked to suck again for 2009. They have nowhere left to go but sideways. Second, they have a new coach. Why not drop a one year QB in as Marrone's recruitment strategy tries (again) to right the Orange this time around? Third, it's a nutty move. For a program that has fallen so far that one of the non-conference games this year is against Maine, they need to try the untried. They need to stagger out of the dark cave into the sunlight and shout "why not pickles and ice cream anyway?!?!" Fourth and most importantly, people hate Greg Paulus. Consider Ian's well leveraged hate. That last link is a classic. Anyway, hate is an emotion and generating emotion is the first step to something... or nothing. But at least it ain't dull.
I haven't been so excited since Brendan Carney kicked for SU. Will I be able to relive the glory of the victory over Wyoming of week five 2006?
