Once a jogger told me he was not a jogger, he was a runner. Looked like jogging to me but, as these things must be critical, I now declare that I am never doing sit-ups again. I shall now simply sit up. I sat up 22,810 times in my 2007-08 season but I packed it in for good a month ago after drifting badly since the summer. Sitting up season is here again - starting now. I feel better already, having just written that. Actually I started a little while ago. I did 80 so far this evening. Weights, too, but I am not bragging that stuff up. I already have fat boy belly ache. Expect another thrilling listing of my sitting up achievements through the upcoming months.

Aaah, running and jogging are indeed different. It's a thing. Detailed discussion here

When my parents ran marathons and dragged my sister and I to run in 5/10 km family "fun" runs, I ran. I was 5' diddly" and weighed 125 when I graduated high school.. Running was fun...I ran everywhere, to eth store, to school, I was Forrest Gump without the stupidity and under doggedness.
Nowadays, I run when I play soccer but at night, I am sad to say, I have devolved to jogging. My knees and ankles hate me, they do. They wake me up silently screaming at me to go find ice packs.
I actually feel guilty that I no longer run fast... sigh. Aging sucks.

It's sad when joggers deny their own actions through the pretense of some Kenyan spiritual connections, some purist snobbery: looka me, I'm Kip Keino in spandex!

I don't jog and I certainly don't run; but I walk really, really quickly...So quickly that I occasionally pass joggers - they are a shuffling bunch here in Oak Bay.
But your situp idea has kindled a thought. My beer belly has gone past the point where a two mile a day walk seems to do anything. A minor reduction in intake and a situp or two. Now that's a thought.
I'll go lie down until the thought passes. Because, after situps there are squats and my knees will blow out.

Here's a new challenge: 100 push ups.
I've biked 990K this spring / summer / fall ... I'm just looking for an opportunity to hit that last 10K and say "done"

I hate pushing up. All I can think of is "hello carpet, hello carpet, hello carpet, hello carpet..." Dumbbell presses are so much mor liberating.
David Janes - November 10, 2008 8:45 AM
Yes but you need a bench for that! As for push ups, intersperse "Good-bye carpet, good-bye carpet, good-bye carpet" in there and it'll be all even.

The 89 dollar bench from Dicks Sporting Goods was the key to my becoming more pale Hulk than Dr. Bruce Banner.

My bench has recently been returned to its former place of prominence, blocking 66% of the easy access to the balance of our basement. Now that the eldest and his GF have flown the coop, I can again start to re-use the weights. My wife has of course put thenix on transforming his basement bedroom into a Matrix-like dojo.. harrumph..
I got my weight bench for $50 used from a former coworker!.

Carpet is yuck, especially when you're three inches away from it. I often wonder how the pets can stand to sleep on that thing.

I saw Umberto Eco speak at Hart House at UofT. He made the insiteful comments (amongst many) that the real expense of books is in the same they consume in your expensive house. Likewise with a weight set.
Incidently, we just just had all the carpet pulled out of the upstairs of our house and replaced with hardwood.
