Having a week off is swell and all but I really have never taken one off without any plan to do some travel or big project. The only plan was to explore my idleness. Has this been wise? Let's review:
- Until about 11:00 am yesterday, I was going to Syracuse to see the game between UMass and the Orange. I have a cold bug to thank for the fact I didn't go and get to watch them go from 22 up with about 22 minutes to go to 4 down at the end of the game. Verdict: idleness saved me from disappointment and a sleet-ridden midnight drive home.
- Within two hours yesterday I got four things done that needed to be done for a while, getting to a number of busy offices that are only open when my office is open. Sounds dull and it was - but without rushing it was not an irritation. Again, sounds dull but being in the presence of the busy when one is not raises the relativity of one's own experience of idleness. Verdict: a slight shift from my plan of pure idleness created an enhanced sense of sloth while hopefully creating the opportunity for future idleness.
- I had timed this week to be a springtime celebration but the cold weather has hung on. This has been a God send as some of the things I might have had to do, like gardening or parging a section of an exterior wall, really demand higher temperatures. Verdict: idleness has been enhanced by rolling the dice on the temperature and saved me from the realization that I am really bad at these skills I have yet to attempt.
- Poker is on TV a lot. Poker is not that interesting but if you are looking for something to be on TV when you are napping, poker is it. When the new information age was begun, no one imagined it would consist of 57% poker between breakfast and supper. Verdict: poker is TV for the unconscious. Poker is soap opera for men.

...couldn't agree more with you about the poker on TV. Surely the sports channels could find some actual sports to cheaply broadcast. I'd rather watch shot putting, even....
