2,370 sat with we four and watched the Watertown Wizards play their opening game for the 2008 season in the New York Collegiate Baseball League. Sure they lost 3-1 but, seeing as we were a little late to the game, we missed the only three runs that Little Falls earned in the top of the first. Lots of action and really good pitching after that initial blip. At least two thrown outs stealing. An inning ending out at first with much booing from the stands - he looked safe to me, too. Watertown's sole run was a homer. I was sorely tempeted to buy a Jim Rice signed purple and yellow baseball hat, too, at the expanded fan stuff shack.
Only complaint? The only beer options were Blue and Blue Light. But, you know, any light beer on an evening when its over 80F and there's baseball in front of you is a good beer. And at 14 bucks for tickets a family of four, is there a better deal?

I had a bad position on that play, I was over in the corner of the stands on the first base side. From where I sat, it looked the catcher had position and blocked the plate, while holding onto the ball.
And yeah, I was also shocked at the pounding he took in the first inning, but he settled down and managed to pitch several good innings after that.

My problem with the out at the plate was that the ump had not been cleaning the plate so that as far as I can tell the catcher was on the plate not in front of it. I don't have a clear recollection of the catcher touching the runner with the glove but I do have one of him thanking his lucky star he had a cup on as the runner's foot hit the plate and his groin at the same time. I thought he was safe. <p>But there were plenty of close calls at first, too, as well as the picks at second. I thought the umps got them all right so it's not like this is an issue.
