When even the Toronto Star is pointing out that NDP leader Jack Layton has the facts wrong, you have to ask yourself who is doing the research:
...the historical reality Layton points to is somewhat more complicated. The British did in fact defeat an Afghan insurgency in the Second Afghan War in 1880 – which ended with a battle in Kandahar, where Canadian troops are currently located. And Alexander's march through Asia in fact stalled in India. This was after his troops marched through Afghanistan and founded the cities of Herat and Kandahar – the latter being named after him.I had no idea that Kandahar was named after Alexander the Great. Anyway, this is not to say that more needs to be done if we are not doing to abandon the land to the forces of statelessness allowing the death academy and the girl enslavers to reinstate themselves. But, in recognition of this "hewowic" stance, for the next seven days I shall hear Jack Layton's words, whatever he says, only in the tone of Pilate as played by Michael Palin in The Life Of Brian:
PILATE: Whom would you have me welease?Wun away! Aw is wost. The situation is hopewess!
BOB HOSKINS: Welease Woger!
CROWD: Yes! Welease Woger! Welease Woger! [laughing]
PILATE: Vewy well. I shall welease Woger!
[Ed.: (applause) Bravo! Fabulous!! A Powerhouse Of Persuasion!!!]
