It is something of a comfortable feeling, this free fall. Sure some people say things like this:
"We still have work," Manager Joe Torre said. "We won’t allow ourselves to get caught up in what people will assume is a foregone conclusion."But those are the words of someone planning on winning, not one trying to avoid losing. Still, the Red Sox have good company with the Mets bumbling, tumbling and stumbling as well. It's not just that they are losing. They are losing with a certain style. Last Friday's eighth inning collapse that turned a 2-7 lead, Sundays failure to convert bases loaded in the ninth into a David Ortiz grandslam...or hit. Last night's snatch of failure from the jaws of victory was particularly sweet - after getting two outs holding a 2-1 lead, Gagne decided to throw bean balls at the right handed pitcher. Except the guy was batting left. In an act of utter remorse and considered correction, Gagne decided to aim for the leftie's ankles. Again, he adjusts. You can see him making one of the next pitches above. Read the rest here. Not pretty.
My new pal Clay Buchholz pitches tonight.

CP described the Jays come from behind win thusly:
"...a 4-3 victory that no doubt sent Red Sox Nation scrambling for the panic button."
Just thought you should know :-)

I have no idea what a panic button is, living in an entirely voluntary but still perpetual state of fear as I do.

I thought that 2004 took care of all that?

That was the end of dispair. Panic is forever.

hehehe, it's too bad you aren't much into the NHL, Alan, you'd make a helluva Leafs fan.
I wouldn't be too panicked about the Sox. They have been torrid all season, and it's best to have the slump now than in two weeks when it really matters. My allegiance (fickle as it is) now resides in New England. Is it too late to get a Coco t-shirt?

Does no one read the archives like this little note from 2003?

Ooooh, my apologies, I should have utilized the search button on the right hand sidebar.
But in an attempt to sway the spotlight away from my negligence, I will mention Howdy Doody, and leave it to linger with you for the rest of the evening. :')

Woohooo! HOme field for the playoffs. Homefield for the playoffs. 1986. Be prepared for revenge, Sox Nationers! (sorry Al, just couldn't resist.)

You just wish the Red Sox would save some gas for the late season, you know? Who cares if you're up by 12 in July, save something for Septemeber!
Ben (The Tiger) - September 23, 2007 8:25 am
Well, they've managed to stagger across the line for a playoff spot. That's what counts.

I have this theory about me and the Sox. I am always wrong. So the more doom and gloom I write, the better they play. Heck, JD Drew was great last night and Gagne pitched a critical inning with great success. I went to bed a 9:30 pm figuring it was a lost cause and WTIC 1080 Hartford was playing the UConn football game for some stunned reason so I missed the end when Lugo and 'Tek hit home runs to win.<p>I was even cheering for the Jays yesterday, too.
