That obit must have been written by the opera department and not the general pop culture department. I mean, really, the phrase "increasingly willing to accept pedestrian musical standards" seems a little haughty, mean-spirited and gratuitous given that most people would not have been able to perceive such a downward slide.

What was of interest and indeed something I remarked upon as a fomer church choir tenor was that his voice remained in good condition even into his middle and senior years. It was amazing that he hit those high at his age. Being able to sing high notes with gusto is one of the greatest joys in life and its no wonder he didn't want to retire.
