Brother Iain -

Speaking of old Expos, I went to see a documentary last night about Bill "Spaceman" Lee barnstorming in Cuba and the man himself was there for a Q&A afterward. He'd clearly spent a few hours in the bar beforehand and was in fine form. (Someone asked what's really said when the catcher, manager, etc., go out to the mound and he answered: "If it was Gary Carter not much ... that guy was dumb as a post.") He also had an interesting observation about why today's pitchers can pitch as many innings as the old-timers did. It's because they don't pitch with the traditional big wind-up anymore, but start their delivery from a position where the shoulder and elbow are tense.

Oops, that should be "can't pitch as many innings"

I caught the end of the interview. I regret not catching Lee playing in the Maritime League in the 80s. He was with Moncton and I think it was all performance art, especially the choice of town.

And it is never inappropriate to link to the portland v. Youppi story.
