Someone talked? Okay, who's the leaker? Who gave up our plan for the medicating couch? Geez, corporate espionage is such a pain.

I do hear you, Al. So many of my brethren work on stuff I can't fathom the reason for. Do we need another zoloft(but there's probably 100 teams working on a successor). Are cholesterol fighting drugs such a great and pressing need(is half the world likely to keel over dead from coronary?)? Not really but there's probaly several hundred teams working on the next great anti-cholosterol drug. Pharma is something that shouldn't be run simply as a business nor as a charity. It has to be both. Resources are limited so we can't chase down everything(if say only 2000 people suffer from it is it right to pump the resources into the finding of the drug for it). But it can't be a business(making drugs that are really little more than 'I don't want to the wear and tear of living' because they sell.). It has to be a reasoned part of both. BUt you're not going to get it. More's the pity.

There are some things that do not deserve the amount of effort put into a "cure" when there are obvious lifestyle related cures available. I also think that prioritizing transplant and other surgery by age is important i.e. a 75 year old should be much further down on the list of transplanet recipients for a heart than a 25 year old, simply because that person has had 50 years of life lived yet the 25 year old has not.

Curing obesity by way of pill is simply a waist (nyuck nyuck) of effort that could be out into some as yet incurable illnesses that people have NO chance of solving on their own.

Although I fully support the creation of medicated couches. I wil put in an order for a caffeine couch so my wife can actually stay up past 10 pm./

Careful Gorthos. At the University of California that is almost hate speech, and would likely get you called into student court and sensitivity training anyway.

Oh I know. But seriously, smoking, drinking too much, eating too much. Do I really want my tax dollars paying for a "cure" when really the cure is at hand it is is called "anti-dog bark-collar" induced willpower training techniques..
