Not even in the middle of February yet and the excuses and perhaps the long knives are being taken out for an airing:
Welcome to Toronto John Thomson, Tomo Ohka and Victor Zambrano — three unheralded free-agent pitchers who are all coming off various arm injuries from last season, but have proven in the past to be capable of chewing up valuable innings at the major-league level. Ohka, 30, won 13 games as a member of the Montreal Expos back in 2002; Thomson, 33, won 14 games as recently as 2004 with the Atlanta Braves; and Zambrano, 31, who underwent elbow surgery last year and isn't expected to be ready to pitch until a couple months into the 2007 season, was considered the ace of a truly awful Tampa Bay Devil Rays squad when he totalled 12 victories in 2003.Wow - 12 wins four years ago: LET'S GO BLUE JAYS!!!
If this was a real team with a real fan base and not a corporate expense account entry just happy to be there, we should be hearing howls of outrage at yet another year about to be blown at the SkyRogersDomeBoatShowCentre. Interesting wikiality fact #3497 that should depress Chris (the only actual honest-to-goodness Jays fan I know) about Zambrano:
On May 6, 2006, Zambrano suffered a torn flexor tendon in his pitching elbow, disabling him for the rest of the 2006 season. Doctors unexpectedly found a torn elbow ligament during surgery on May 15, resulting in the second Tommy John elbow surgery of his career. Zambrano is expected to be sidelined well into the 2007 season, and he was non-tendered by the Mets, and became a free agent in December 2006.Fabulous.

I think you could call me a Tigers fan who settles for the Jays because the Tigers usually suck even more. And yeah this scraping of the barrel-leavings is a tad disappointing. It looks a lot like the Leafs' former strategy under Quinn -- hire a lot of overpaid worn-out vets who have experience (but not, sadly, constitution). I'll wait to see them in action before passing judgment.
