Styling. That is what it was all about. Not the need to protect Iranian waters. Not the pressure coming from the UN. It was the need to get a higher profile for the Iranian men's suit industry and I have to say Mr. Ahmadinejad has a point. Those are some manly shades of grey and choosing the uniformity in the shirt rather than the suit itself was something of a master stroke.
Tough work being a prospective dictator given the neighbourhood.

I agree with you on the suits but that scarf and striped t-shirt is a little frumpy. Is the Iranian government more concerned about men's fashion than women's? Why do the guys get to be stylin' but the gals must be marmish? hmmmm.
gorthos - April 5, 2007 10:02 am
I am with Hans on this one. Frumpy is the word I cam up with the moment I saw her.. then again, she IS English and apart from the occasional celeb, English women are not know for their fashion sense..
gr - April 5, 2007 10:19 am
poor woman--the gents look great, but why do they make her wear the scarf, and the little boy outfit? striped shirt and cargo jeans???
cm - April 5, 2007 10:37 am
To which the Iranians would say, what was she doing away from home in the first place?
Hans - April 5, 2007 10:57 am
...then again, its probably a million times more stylin' than the sack of potatoes look that is "all the rage" so to speak amongst the taliban-oppressed set. I guess I'm saying the Ayatollahs still have a ways to go to understand women's fashion.
Alan - April 5, 2007 11:10 am
What a bunch of whack jobs you all are. She is clearly being dressed as the Queen on the weekend, the highest compliment an Iranian fashion advisor might be able to come up with.
Paul of Kingston - April 5, 2007 11:14 am
I recall an old Goon Show bit about exploding shirt tails. Those sailors better get those Iranian duds off PDQ.
gorthos - April 5, 2007 11:38 am
The Goon Show? WIth Spike Milligan? Cripes Paul, I knew you were older than me but I thought you were younger than my mom ;)
I look at that picture again and all I can say is "aha! I found Waldo's sister"!
Hans - April 5, 2007 11:54 am
I have been seeking whackjob status for a while. I am grateful to the President of Iran for getting me there. ;)
Alan - April 5, 2007 12:11 pm
I give you the Queen...or a Queen-like object:<p><center><img src="images/2007c/queen1.jpg" vspace="10" hspace="10"><img src="images/2007c/queen2.jpg" vspace="10" hspace="10"><img src="images/2007c/queen3.jpg" vspace="10" hspace="10">
gr - April 5, 2007 12:45 pm
Since when did the Queen give up on the corgis and take up with the black labs??? I have to say, that is a surprising development.
Alan has a point about scarves. Quite fashionable, in some quarters no doubt. But really, shouldn't those sailors and marines be in uniform? Is it all about insulting them, stripping them of military authority and rank, making them first prisoners then freed civilians?
gorthos - April 5, 2007 2:08 pm
The prez of Iran is not nly very well educated but also very well dressed. My thought is if a suit like his (http://www.kazind.com/newsarchives/newsvolume72pic5.jpg) is good enough for him, it is good enough for the UK sailors.
Alan - April 5, 2007 2:12 pm
I am unfamiliar with that use of the word "well".
Paul of Kingston - April 5, 2007 3:14 pm
Yes - that's the Goon Show with Spike Milligan and Peter Sellers and Harry Secombe.
As to my age - that show was way before my time - but real funny is timeless n'est pas?
gorthos - April 5, 2007 3:18 pm
I dunno, he seems pretty much one of the most well educated leaders of the world to me:
In 1976, he took Iran's national university entrance exams (konkoor) to gain admission into Iran's top universities. His test score ranked him 132nd among over 400,000 participants that year,[12] landing him at the prestigious Iran University of Science and Technology (IUST) as an undergraduate student of civil engineering.
After the revolution, he entered the Master of Science program for civil engineering in 1984. In 1989, he became a member of the Science faculty at the university whereat he had studied.[13] In 1997, he received his Ph.D. in transportation engineering and planning from the Science and Technology University. Even after being elected President, Ahmadinejad continued living in a simple apartment flat and eating meals brought from home, in his office. Both of these traits contributed to his widespread support amongst the poorer classes of Iran.[14]
And I fully support his lack of a tie and full beard with his well made suits. He is a rebel fashion icon among world leaders..

And astonishly, the entire radio script of which can be found here:

Brother Iain - April 5, 2007 6:13 pm
I knew if I stuck with it long enough, the no-tie look would catch on.
gorthos - April 5, 2007 6:58 pm
I don't own a suit, but if I did, it would be a linen, semi-rumpled beige number that the Iranian Prez wears occasionally, with a black un-tie-shod underneath..
Call me shallow, but the 1940's Cairo spy look is in with me... now if only I had a job to buy a suit for... hrmmm..
And Paul, yes, I am an afficianado of all things Sellers, I was joshin ya. I hereby propose an evening of beer and Sellers flicks at my new abode in the early summer after barbecuing of dead animals and soccer (not necessarily in that order).. hoy hoy.. yes, all locals invited to the housewarming gathering. And Gary too.
gr - April 5, 2007 7:38 pm
Oh sure, I am a Peter Sellers fan, and although you are insane, Gorthos, and willfully incendiary and offensive, I will join you and thank you for the invite.
Alec Guinees, now there was a comic actor to remember, also.
I shall bring a peanut butter sandwich to eat.
gr - April 5, 2007 7:39 pm
Guinness, dammit
gorthos - April 5, 2007 7:56 pm
Gary, I shall cook natures burgers for you and I shall eat them as well. My wife is a farmers daughter so my attempts to be vegetarian hav ebeen thwarted many times.. so I gave up.
mmm.. guinness.. I have however my fave beer tonight, and I shall drink it sans tie.. Caledonian 80 shilling ale.
I guess I haven't railed on about Italian police here yet have I.. I announce a boyott of all things Italian to retort against the violence against English footall fans yesterday in rome..
I am not insane.
Jay Currie - April 7, 2007 6:29 am
Ties are not mentioned in the Koran...QED
(Neither are head scarves but that's different...it's a girl thing.)
gorthos - April 7, 2007 8:48 am
What about single breasted versus double breasted suits...
Sidney Stratton - April 8, 2007 2:59 pm
All well and good ...but seriously, does any one have a suggestion as to where (outside of Iran) it might be possible to purchase one of these men's suits?
Alan - April 8, 2007 9:41 pm
The Globe and Mail's business section on Saturday had a couple of paragraphs on the designer of these suits.
WCG - April 8, 2007 11:17 pm
I thought the corgies were the Queen Mum's thing?
And even if head scarves aren't in the Koran, modesty is. It's the fact that I would dress in such a way as to inflame the passions of a man. I'm doing them all a kindness if I cover up my bits and make things easier for all, sin-wise I mean. Oh the power that we women have to show a little ankle! Now where did I put those skirts for my piano's legs??
Sidney Stratton - April 9, 2007 5:16 pm
Alan - thanks for pointing out the Globe and Mail send up on the Iranian suits, however no joy in terms of suggesting a retail outlet. Remember what the Soviet apparatchiks wore in the '50's? - just try to find even a picture of one now.
Alan - April 9, 2007 5:32 pm
Try Google images for May Day Moscow. I found this.
