Technology, old and new.
To say I had a grand time is the under-estimation of the day. Being a former college radio guy there is nothing better than hanging around the NCPR production studio on the old sofa like the NPR groupie I am. Plus I saw the first decent sticking snow of the year and helped Joel reach the high spots on the satellite dish.
I got to chat about the web with David Sommerstein before he had to go spin dance tracks on The Beat Authority via whatever gets spun when you play Mp3s. Then I got to hang out with the telephone volunteers until a bunch of frat boys...err...fraternity members from Sigma Chi at Clarkson bumped me out of the seat and gave me an excuse to talk beer with Joel as well as the differences between Canadian and US local political and judicial structures and the New York State constitution. I also chatted with Ellen and Martha and June and Jackie and Paul and left both fired up about our near neighbours and the good things we can share as well as incredibly jealous of those who get to sail that ship of radio. But it is good to work for the public weal in my way, too, and listen to NCPR as I do content to be a volunteer on call.

Ahh Radio. I took broadcasting at college for three semesters. Almost went on to become an announcer/producer.. BUT I saw the annual statement that showed teh average graduates income, then skedadled on to engineering tech program. I liked being on-air but hated top-40 music. I couldn't guarantee a job on CBC so I vamoosed.

Alan,
Here's what I liked about your visit to NCPR yesterday...finding out
something new and surprising about YOU. Here I thought you were BEER and
BROADCASTING...come to find out, you and wife are [Ed.: reference to secret stuff hidden.] Now that's cool. Really cool. Relationships that keep opening up surprises between/about people (as long as it doesn't involve a third party in the marital bed), are the kind of relationships that have long-distance legs...over time and over geography. Come back soon and surprise us some more...Meanwhile, three cheers for Kingston, Ontario. A very cool town.

Alan
I knew you and your spouse were alien/human hybrids.
I called it first folks! Ha!
For the record, NCPR is un-reachable in Madoc, Stirling or Marmora however it IS available at the home we are in the process of closing on. Thanks Alan for introducing me to such a decent station!

The alien/human hybrid thing was pretty obvious in retrospect.

Have I really written against cranial straw sucking? Isn't that as obvious on this planet as on mine?

And it was at this moment that I began to question my decision to hang out around here.
