Have you ever been too tired to write about a punter and field goal kicker? Maybe tonight. I think all this putting off of daylight savings time thing has finally got to me. The hours are wrong. It is like living in another time zone where everything looks the same. Next time it is this dark this early it will be all that much nearer to the holidays and as soon as that is over the days are getting longer...which is better. No wonder I am too tired to write about a punter and field goal kicker. Maybe tonight.
In compensation for my laziness, please thrill to a selection of photographs of the Queen in Estonia.

Syracuse played a tough game against a VERY good Louisville team. They never had a chance, but played like they could win.
I think it is Chris Taylor whoo was chatting about this: so far Series predictions look right. Detroit is good, but the Cards aren't giving up easy.

Well the world of field goal kicking got a treat on Sunday as Matt Bryant of Tampa Bay toed a 62 yarder in the last seconds of the game to win by two points over Philly - quite exciting.

Are you freaking kidding me? I got up, like, an hour early or something.
Alan - October 23, 2006 11:24 AM
The sovereign is using law to confuse time, Flea. Do something. Do anything.
Flea - October 23, 2006 11:35 AM
Well, I have no plans to change my horological devices for a few days yet, I can assure you of that.

Gary - the first game was a little frightening. That 7-2 Cards nonsense made it look like ry's prediction (6-7 games with a Cards Series win) was the likeliest outcome. Last night Detroit redeemed themselves, I was all set to name my first kid Kenny Rogers. Wanda did not rule it out (I believe her exact comment was "by the time he hits high school no one will remember the C&W singer or the pitcher"). Too bad Todd Jones blew the one-hitter (and my 3-run spread prediction) in the 9th, but at least the Tigers won.

Just make sure your Kenny Rogers is the one without the beard and also knows how to hide whatever was on his hand better than the one did last night.

The pats game was splendiferous. Well, what I saw of it. Bills suck this season more than I usually say they suck.

Like I was saying before, Chris, watch the Cards, but I think, as you do, they can only go so far. Isn't it a pleasure to have a third series in three years with non-traditional baseball powers playing their hearts out, like baseball is a game and not just a big money business?
gr - October 23, 2006 1:35 PM
It kinda bums me out, Gorthos, about the Bills. Alan and a busload of us gen x slackers should go to the Buffalo Brewpub and a Bills game some EARLY fall day some year. They have the cheapest tickets in the NFL. And maybe the worst weather in December.

I was in a riot this afternoon. My first. I've posted photos and a recording of helicopters and shots being fired as I tried to get across the street. It's probably going to get worse before it gets better. The rioters are extreme nationalists, but the police are driving them into the Fidesz Rally which is a few blocks away. The Fidesz people are middle class moderates and if any of them is hurt it would not only be bad for them it might turn the tide towards the extremists and against the government. I know. I'm off topic, but I thought you might like to know.

I do not subscribe to the theory that anything intentionally rule-breaking or game-altering was on Rogers' hand in the first inning or two -- considering that he then pitched several scoreless innings without it, having had his hands washed under umpire supervision. His career postseason ERA is not stellar, but this year (and not just in postseason) he has been pretty darn good.
Gary, I think this will be a highly entertaining series no matter who takes the Big Prize. The teams are pretty evenly matched; the Cards have good bats and they are countered by the Tigers' slightly better pitching. The best thing is, as you say, that it is not a foregone conclusion that a given team will waltz all over the opposition. They are both good enough (and have enough historical screwup-ism) to make it a contest.
And yikes, Marian -- stay safe!
Alan - October 23, 2006 2:05 PM
Marian, you are doing some great first person citizen journalist blogging. Stay safe.
Marian - October 23, 2006 2:35 PM
Hey, thanks. Did you listen to the recording?
gr - October 23, 2006 2:41 PM
Chris: I am a Cubs/Red Sox/Mets fan. Really, you could just say 'anybody but the Yankees fan'. I wish the Yanks had won the series in 2001, but that was you, know, for the sake of New Yorkers.
God Marian, I hope you live in some safe distant part of the city. We actually don't need your first hand reportage, just that you get safe.
Marian - October 23, 2006 2:46 PM
I think the recording is great. You guys should check it out. We came across the crowd by accident. We were going to go take pictures of the Fidesz rally which we thought would be tame, but the riots came between us. So... you guys get the benefit of hearing what it sounds like to be in a Budapest riot first even before it's really news there.

Here's the link to recording.

Marian, it sounds awful, but you must be home now.
Marian - October 23, 2006 2:58 PM
We are home and listening to rioters on the news. Oct 23rd is a holiday, so there's nothing much to do besides run into packs of rioters and take pictures of them. Live a little, I say.
