The New York Times has an article on the pitchers the Yankees might go after in the near future with the question being why not Ted Lilly?
It could be that the Yankees are more serious about other free agents from a group that includes Jason Schmidt, Gil Meche, Randy Wolf, Jeff Suppan and Miguel Batista. Or it could be that Brian Cashman, the general manager, really does want to pass. After bidding more than $30 million for the rights to negotiate with the Japanese star Daisuke Matsuzaka — and falling well short of Boston’s winning bid, $51.1 million — the Yankees say they are taking a step back. Cashman wants to lower the team’s payroll while getting younger, and he insists the Yankees have viable internal candidates for all their holes. All I can see in that passage above is one word - Suppan. After his work in the World Series, I don't know why he is not heads and shoulders above the rest of the contenders, certainly above Ted Lilly.
And Soriano is now a Cub. Cub fans should be happy.

Why? When the biggest problem, consistent and unijured pitching, hasn't been adressed we should be happy? At least they got rid of Dusty Baker. He's a great teaching guy. But he can't manage for the Big Enchillada(hmmm, enchilladas).
Unless they got rid of Matt Murton(who I like) or Jones(who I thought signed a 3 year deal) I don't see where Soriano fits in the Cubs lineup. But they need solid and consistent pitching, as do the Angels. I'd rather they saved that money on Soriano and threw it at Schmidt or Zito(and I'm predicting that one of them will be in pinstripes next season).
You crazy Bostoners. That's an insane sum you coughed up just to talk to him. YOu even outbid the Yankees(those damn Yankees). I hope he doesn't do what Hideo Nomo did---one outstanding season and then self-destruct. That would be fun, and sad, to watch(again).
