Ooooh- NCAA sports pool! Who is in?

Hans -

PEI used to get its CBS cable feed out of Rochester so there used to be SU games on TV all the time. Back in those days SU played a pretty exciting game. I think point guard Sherman Douglas and forwards Derrick Coleman and Ronnie Seikaly were the pioneers of the alley-oop. At least, I had never seen it before. It was awesome to watch. I think that team lost to Indiana in the final with Stevie Alford shooting the lights out. Which proves a truism about basketball that all coaches should heed: Good shooting beats athleticism. Interestingly, all those guys I just mentioned had unspectacular NBA careers.

Consider the foregoing a vote for a GENX40 March Madness pool. Assuming we get a vote.

Alan -

Wooot! Of course you get a vote. Our Elections Committee, however, is riddled with corruption.
Start picking some rules. I definitetly need a darkhorse pcik in my life. Plus a bonus points question based on cricket.

Mike -

Can we mash in some Stanley Cup playoffs and other stuff?

Alan -

Separate pool. Separate pool.

Hans -

Don't worry, Al. I'm from PEI so I am familiar with election corruption in a myriad of forms.

I vote for separate pools, too. That way Al can string us along/keep us interested in his blog starting next week all the way through to June, at least.

Guarranteed visitations stats! What blogger could refuse?!?!?!

Alan -

Whooot!!!!

What you really need, Hans, is a US Champs shop nearby so you can buy 14 dollar NCAA team t-shirts to guide your pool picks through March. Sunday I had the kids all dressed up in various orange garments to watch the end of McNamara's life at the SU carrier dome. My wife came in at one point and gave me that look I suspect a wife might give seeing Daddy reading "Say Hello To Scientology" to the kids at bedtime.

Sherm Douglas!! Haven't heard that name in awhile. How about Billy Owens, Tony "Red" Bruin, Lawrence "in" Moten, Stevey Thompson, Canadian Leo Rautins and my favorite SU player of all-time Louis Orr (because I love the Knicks) ...just to name a few. Go Cus!!

A Mount Allison friend of mine is running a basketball pool(online) for the third straight year. If your interested in the details, then drop my email a line. The winning prize could be as high as $600 or so.

As well, I'm in on your pool Alan.

Alan -

Trust a Mountie to sully an NCAA pool with money. Me, I'm giving away ham sandwiches as long as the winners forward a SASE.

Scott -

By the way, I took a sabbatical from the Orange this year. I have adopted the Villanova Wilcats as my tourney team. Who can resist a team with 6 great inner city guards.

Alan -

Self Addressed Stamped Envelope. Am I so old that "SASE" is a relic?

cm -

Go Big Blue! Will the sandwich be toasted?

Alan -

Where big guys hug little guys thereby forcing the little guy's nose in the armpit of the big guy, there, in that place, there is hope - GO SU, GO ORANGE!!!:

Arthur -

there, in that place, there is hope - GO SU, GO ORANGE!!!:

Is that the Dutch basketball team?

Alan -

I outta be.

Temujin -

Forget basketball... are you watching the World Baseball Championships???
Canada 7, USA 0 in the fourth inning.

Matt Stairs for PM!

Alan -

I am watching the baseball! We rule!

Temujin -

USA coming back, but dang... if Canada can pull this off, what an upset.

Hans -

Always liked Stevie Thompson. Class Act. My all-time fave Orangeman, though, was Derek Brower.

Scott -

Buck "I can block the plate" Martinez is the US coach. How great is that?

Scott -

Steve Nash in the crowd with what looked like the biggest glass of rum and coke I have ever seen! I digress, probably just coke and coke since they are playing the spurs tomorrow night.

Alan -

Wow. I now officially have a crush on Adam Stern.

Temujin -

HAHAHA! Probably was Rum :-)

Great game nonetheless. Full marks to Canada for holding on. How great is it to see Alex Rodriguez walk off the field all dejected!?

Temujin -

Yeah, now I'm saying Stern for PM... and Stairs for Minister of Democratic Renewal!

Alan -

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooot!

Phil -

I'm a local 'Cusan who attended my first SU game with my Dad on my seventh birthday, back when Boeheim was still an assistant coach. I picked my first apartment to be within walking distance of the Dome. Anyway, you get the picture, I bleed Orange.

It's incredible to see all these posts about SU from folks outside C.N.Y. I always assumed that our obsession was incredibly localized. It's great to see the impact that the Orange have had.

So, one question: should I be rooting for the Leafs or the Sens?

Alan -

Hey Phil. When I was in undergrad ('81-'85), Syracuse obsession was very active in Nova Scotia. An orange hoodie was a very cool thing. NS has a bigger basketball following than other parts of Canada for some reason. The national college championships are always hld there because they can pretty much fill the arena for every game no matter who plays. So it was big for me to find myself within the zone of more traditional Orange fandom.
As for hockey, I think you should be rooting for who ever is the team connected to the Crunch. I know Binghampton is the Sens farm team. Gary, now in Ithaca, likes the Sens.

Alan -

More on the freak-out by Boeheim.
