Mutton BBQ

905 milesAmongst the texts and pamphlets cluttering up the house with tissue boxes and bottles of Buckleys is that copy of
Roadfood I just picked up along with the authors'
autobiography. Low and behold on pages 152 and 155 there are entries for two BBQ joints in
Owensboro, on the Kentucky side of the Indiana-Kentucky stretch of the Ohio River: the
Moonlite Bar-B-Q and George's. The area, settled I understand by the Welsh, specialized in mutton feeds. The Moonlight so far has the advantage of apparently offering a BBQ buffet. Consider that concept for a moment, ye Canadians of the pasty white north - all you can eat BBQ buffet. Now all I need is a bunch of other family friendly excuses to force the long march to the centre of the continent. Help as to the available options welcome.
Update: Cookbook!!!

Heh. I can do the advanced party arrangements and the like. This is only about 4 hours away from me. Or I can do an advanced tasting and report back(if I can pry the cheque book away from The Wife---a monumental task I assure you).
Maybe you could wait 'til college Basketball season rolls around again. 'Kids, were going to a Kansas Jayhawks game.' Or you could come see minor league hockey down here in Indianapolis, with a minor detour.
none of them quite equate with going to Cooperstown(lucky bastich), but there are excuses to be had.

This is sounding very interesting. How is the college football in that area?

JoA is the guy to ask on the college football score. I've never really been a college football guy, and he played some college ball in the area.
Purdue is decent and has been in the top 25 off and on during each of the last 3 seasons. There's a big game between Purdue and Indiana every year, but it't not much of a real rivalry since IU is really bad at football.
Hey, where are the CWS regionals this year? That could be a good excuse.
Stolen blatantly from ESPN
"Kentucky and Pepperdine will host a regional for the first time, while North Carolina, Oregon State and Virginia are hosting for the second time in school history. This will be the 22nd time that Texas has hosted a regional, while Clemson (11th) is the only other institution to host 10 or more times since the NCAA went to the regional format in 1975. " Short notice though since the tourney starts tomorrow.

I Live in the great town of Owensboro Kentucky. People come from all over the world for Moonlite. I remember a few years back President Clinton stopped by and ate. I can attest to the fact that it is very good. The buffet is huge plus very good and affordable. Every time a family member comes to visit they insist we go there. I believe they sale their product online at www.moonlite.com. My oldest brother lives in Oregon and orders from them.
There are also several famous people from our small town. The biggest is Johnny Depp. Also, Florence Henderson. Sports stars include Darrell and Michael waltrip and Brad Wilkerson with the Texas Rangers.
Three weeks ago, we held our International B B Q fest, it was a lower than usually turn out because of the weather but still almost 60,000 came. Usually it’s upwards of 80,000.
You can read all about it at www.bbqfest.com. State Legislators just voted us mutton capitol of the world. There will be another bbq fest coming in the fall. This one will be the first and it will be a Kansas City sanctioned event. You can email for details. Mooker1969@yahoo.com

OK - I get the cookbook and it is like food your crazy great-aunt in Middleton Nova Scotia would have made in 1974. Like this:
Drain juice from cherries and pineapple. Heat and dissolve Jell-O with juice. Cool. Mix cream cheese with 3 tablespoons Jell-O mixture. Combine pineapple, cheese and nuts. Add to Jell-O and belnd well. Fold in cherries. Add cola and blend. Pour into mold. Chill well until firm.
The good aspect of it is all comfort food but it is like half the ingredients were swapped randomly with other things.

It was the cola that got me. Cola?
