Woke up way too late and had to deal with my friend Manual Spammo. What poor lives these saps must lead to have to cut and past their way now through the handy dandy "are you human" quiz before each comment is posted. Looks like it took longer to post than delete. That is a gain. Anyway:
- Notice: SayNay must email me at genx40@gmail.com today to answer certain questions today if he/she is not to have every comment deleted upon posting.
- Update on great radio: NCPR played an interview this morning of one WWII vet including reflections on the misappropriation of patriotism and heroism. To my mind it is no different than the appropriation of the word "Christian" by the ecumenically-resistent North American protestant evangelical right.
- Consider these considerations: blogging is like bottled water, the web is another mass medium, most people had niche based lives before web 2.0, blogging derives from early 90s cocooning, there may be way more than 57 channels but there is still nothing on.
- It would appear that the Government is not amused by the suggestion in the Globe yesterday that the PMO was trying to keep 40,000 in the war zone of Lebanon under wraps.
- Municipal wi-fi for Toronto - who knew? Is this good?
- The Red Sox have recovered from their all-star week jitters, relying yesterday on a 87 year old Grampy Curt Schilling if the photo on this article is anything to go by. Nice to see the Jays imploding...yet beating the Yankees and the blame going to last year's player of the year. Am I dreaming?

I am human, yes, and even starting to feel that way.
I'm not sure how I feel about free wi-fi. What if it's down? Who do you call? And what if you don't have text messaging? (Although I suppose if you want free wi-fi you probably do have text messaging, but still, it might not necessarily be a given.)
Lastly, I am becoming one of those annoying people who doesn't watch tv. Except for Coronation Street.
(And I do wish it would let you preview without having to do the "are you human" again before posting.)

We need more Corrie around here! Les hooking up with Status Quo and smashing up his wedding gifts, now that's good television!

Wifi: normally phuckofvist part of me would say this is a bad idea, as I don't think the city should leave this to industry. Unfortunately, industry in Canada is all pretty cozy with each other and we're not seeing a lot of price competition, so bring it on.
Spam: I'm quite impressed too they're going through all this trouble. Maybe your code buddies can start detecting posts that are all or mostly links?
PMO: the CBC headline this morning was "Harper returns to Canada with refugees in tow", making me think of A Bridge Too Far and the glider fleet. They toned it down a half-hour later, making me think that they're pretty bored during the graveyard shift.

I don't mind the weird little test before I post, but this will greatly reduce the number of dumb comments I make, as I am too lazy to type that stuff every time. Yes, fewer off-topic comments and bad jokes (loud applause from the peanut gallery)
As for TV, the wife and I had an antennae at the old house, a monster, and got lotsa Boston area channels. I tended to watch football and hockey and that is it. That is not the case here in middle New York, so we abandoned the TV. Don't miss it, but we are in between hockey and football season, so I wonder whose TV and fridge will host me every weekend. Am I a loser if I go to my mother's house to watch sports?

It is an interesting McLuhanesque "side effect that is more important perhaps than the primary purpose" that putting those six extra letters above creates a level of consideration, a moment of pause.
CM: you actually preview? WHo the hell previews for my blog?
cm - July 21, 2006 11:02 am
Yes, Alan, I preview. Gotta make sure I get it just right before I post.
gr, I for one will miss the off-topic comments and bad jokes. I'm still telling the swimming trunks one.
gr - July 21, 2006 1:29 pm
Alright, cm, for you I will suffer the nuisance of typing that mess. Yes, Alan, it does give pause. Back to speedos and chipminks. BTW-I thought DJs return remark to the Italian soccer fan rather amusing, although the guy has a point about Italian food.
Alan - July 21, 2006 1:34 pm
What you guys do not see is a new page in my administration system that allows me to delete comments in bulk no matter what thread they appear on. This is gold to me as previously I manually deleted each smappy comment one by one which took about 5 clicks per delete.
cm - July 21, 2006 2:00 pm
I totally missed the Italian food conversation. :-(
And I will now post without previewing first. Living dangerously...
Alan - July 21, 2006 2:13 pm
Woot! Maybe we need a "Are you human?" acronym contest. Mine for this comment is "wiuhgi" or "what I understand: has Gary incised?"
Alan - July 21, 2006 2:32 pm
Did I mention that this is awfully good:<center><p><object width="425" height="350"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/kwmVixeY7p0"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/kwmVixeY7p0" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" width="425" height="350"></embed></object></center>

This one had 'ibad' etc. I think the deck is stacked here, I'm not that bad.
cm--go to 'world cup: Italy's in' to read comments.
Alan-you posting tunes is an EXCELLENT development. Do it early and often. (like I said yesterday: free Sonic Youth tunes on their site!!!!)
cm - July 21, 2006 3:17 pm
I keep getting z's in mine. Makes it very difficult to come up with a witty acronym. Or even a not-witty one.
I did finally read the Italy comments. Too funny.

Too bad you don't use WordPress...Akismet. fire and forget and after it stores up all the spam it dumps it all without the intervention of human hands....Now, if I could just get it to mark Robert McClelland as spam...
Alan - July 21, 2006 5:01 pm
I will trade that for free unlimited bandwidth and custom backend anyday.
gr - July 21, 2006 5:14 pm
None of my business, but I wonder if saynay is in trouble? Taken out behind the woodshed for a whuppin'?
cm--it is 4:14 eastern standard and looking good for some enchiladas and healthful Friday afternoon beverages and maybe a movie later. This machine is going OFF.

Think of that image of Sartre on the iceflow, then see him/her shrinking as he/she slides out of view until nothing but a speck on the horizon...then...nothing. He has joined the other in the automatic delete category.
Alan - July 27, 2006 3:42 pm
Apparently there is one good reason for a municipal wifi - you can't get it for free in TO anymore.

Halifax's low tech approach.
