So nice to wake to an absence of irritation. I was so used to it.
So anyway, last week at portland's we did the Mentos trick. You take a 2 litre bootle of pop, drop in 5 Mentos and three second later the pop bottle / soda bottle erupts and shoots in its entirety out the bottle top. It is quite the thing and I encourage you to play with it as it is a three dollar trick and what else can you do for three dollars that tops off a BBQ like that. Here is a picture of someone else doing it. Here is the NPR story where I heard about the project...ok...trick.
After it was over and the lawn was well watered to rinse away the Coke, we do in to get the kids ready for sleep and someone pops their head out maybe half an hour later to see the place swarming with these huge slugs lapping up the Coke and Mento mixture. Granted that is a kid's hat but that is one huge slug. A prize for anyone who can give the latin name for the species of slug.

I think that's something steve-o should try as his next stunt. Drink a full 2 litres of coke and then pop three mentos. That would be one big belch!

I have heard that the Univ of California mascot is the banana slug. I think they kinda look like that, and Sean sorta gives the Latin up there, right?

I think you were in the wrong portland on the wrong coast for these creatures, but hey, do I WIN A PRIZE? They look about right.

Before leaving BC I bought a cast silver necklace in the shape of a banana slug. Aaah, home sweet home.

Speaking of spam: I was at the store and 2 guys speaking Spanish, dressed in painting gear, came out with a big sub roll and a can of Spam. My first thought was 'eeeewww!' as even many non-vegetarians might say, but then I realized that for maybe only a couple of bucks 2 guys could have a big and filling lunch, and I felt bad, because those guys looked like they work very hard and don't have a lot of money. (there but for the grace of God go I) Far be it for me to insult anybody's lunch.

Alan, have you seen this Mentos/Diet Coke video? 110 litres of pop flying around in a choreographed display. Wow.

Limus Maximus if I'm not mistaken. We found one in our backyard a few years ago that was about 9 inches stretching out and bigger than the diameter of a 'toonie'. Might not have been odd for some places but this was western Newfoundland so it was a bit out of range for a slug that size. (we let it go in the woods behind my grandmothers' house.

A pic of the slug. As it made a 'run' for it it stretched out more.

Bingo!

Oh, my gosh! I need help! I have a slug exactly like the same that comes under my adjoining carport every night at the same time. The first time I discovered it it was laying on the top of a little pile of dog food that I had laying out for my dog. It's whole body was rippling and pulsasting and I sat there and watched it (through my window, yuck!). The next morning the pile was gone and the "slime" it leaves was on the ground. It was so bloated as I watched it eating and I am so freaked out about this I don't know how to get rid of it! Help! I don't know how you all touched them!

We held them close and called them George.

hehe! I will try that. It visited again last night and I snapped a picture and then scoured my bed for any visitors before bed. I think this will drive me to therapy! : )
