Nothing like when things get ugly. For my non-Canadian readers I offer the following snapshot of where our national election has found itself with under two weeks to go and the Liberal government and Prime Minister Martin dropping in the polls:
Starting with grainy, unfocused close-ups of Harper's eyes and a martial drum beat, the Liberal ads all follow the same format, using past comments by or about Harper to paint a deeply unflattering portrait as his face comes into focus. Some of the ads end with the Liberal financing disclaimer stamped across Harper's upper lip like a Nazi moustache.Gold.Scott Reid, Martin's communication director, denied the ads are negative.

I remember seeing Kim Campbell's "Chretien has an ugly face" ads for the first time and thinking, "oh my god, these guys are nuts". As with then this is symptomatic, not the cause.

And, of course, a free pass for the CPC for kicking this off with a spoooooky two-tone close-up of Paul Martin in their reverse attack-ad, attack-ad.

It is all so ma-chur. I am now planning to press down very hard on the ballot as I vote NDP.
That is the way it is! - January 11, 2006 1:09 PM
Beating Martin in a debate is simple, just show up.
Martin would need credibility to win a debate, and that is something both he and the liberal party dont have.
Martin still has not explained his slick little ship reflagging loophole stunt to the Canadian taxpayer on shose backs he acquired so much wealth.
So much for personal integrity.
Martin re wrote the whistleblower rules to effectively gag anyone who would want to call attention to corruption in political office.
And all the media coverage of billions of tax dollars evaporating without a trace or an explanation or jailtime or forensic accounting to recover the money pretty well sums up the zero chance of Martin winning any debate.
