Looking for a sign of the endtimes? How about trading the one veteran pitcher you have that is on an upswing?
The Padres have had talks with the Red Sox about the possibility of bringing left-hander David Wells back to San Diego for the remainder of the season before playoff rosters are set on Friday, Kevin Towers, the Padres' general manager, told MLB.com on Tuesday night. "We've had some dialogue, but nothing is imminent," Towers said after the Padres defeated the Diamondbacks, 8-3, at Chase Field. "I think they know that [Wells] would have the most value if they trade him before Sept. 1 so he's eligible for postseason play."I would be happy for Wells as he is from the San Diego area and did he part for the Sox as a cornerstone in the 2005 run to the playoffs. But it is rotten being in the position that the Soxs are having to make this kind of decision before the end of the week. Who else might go? Will my "Coco" Red Sox t-shirt become obsolete?

.279 for August. I had to figure it out. They are 8-29 this month.

It is unbelievable but also has taken the entire “Red Sox choke in August” off the table. This is just a freak storm that has placed them in another realm altogether. I am just waiting for the ball to drop for Lowell, Loretta or Yuke.

So let’s get this straight?? here is a list of the walking (or limping) wounded?..

LF- Manny Ramirez – bad knee
CF Coco Crisp – bad shoulder
RF Wily Mo Pena – bad wrist, Trot Nixon – strained oblique
C Jason Varitek – bad knee
SS Alex Gonzalez – bad back
RP Keith Foulke – bad back
RP Lenny DiNardo – bad back
SP Jon Lester – bad back and cancer treatment (????)
SP Tim Wakefield – fractured ribs
SP Matt Clement – bad elbow

So, they’ve lost their whole outfield and top reserve, starting shortstop, starting catcher, their primary set-up man and long man and three-fifths of their rotation??. All this, plus their pitching coach has hip replacement surgery and their manager is spitting up blood and their GM is working without a contract?..
Sounds like David Wells is being traded back to SD today. Remember a month ago when we wondered if they would make any trades to put them over the playoff hump? Now I’m hoping they can just fill out a lineup card??.
I should have said "ball to drop on..." I suppose.
