My Weather Report. Where is that chalk? Where is Percy Saltzman?
Apparently I hiked with a 50 pound backpack all night or that is how the orange dawn finds me. We wait for the storm to come. This has been a modest heatwave of only a few days but a real draining one. Once again, the amazingly useful forecast discussion feature of the US National Weather Service explains what is going on better than anything else I have seen:
ONE MORE DAY OF OPRESSIVE HEAT AND HUMIDITY ON TAP FOR THE REGION BEFORE SOME WELCOME RELIEF BUILDS IN THURSDAY AND FRIDAY. HEAT ADVISORIES/WARNINGS WILL CONTINUE THROUGH 8PM TODAY FOR THE HIGH HEAT INDEX VALUES...ESPECIALLY OVER THE FINGER LAKES REGION. THE RIDGE CENTERED OVER THE OHIO VALLEY WILL FLATTEN AND ALLOW A COLD FRONT NOW OVER THE UPPER GREAT LAKES TO SAG SOUTH. THE FLATTENING RIDGE MEANS THAT THUNDERSTORMS THAT HAVE BEEN OCCURRING OVER THE UPPER LAKES AND SOUTHERN ONTARIO WILL BE ABLE TO DRIFT FURTHER SOUTH ACROSS THE REGION. PRECIP PROBABILITIES WILL INCREASE FROM NORTH TO SOUTH THIS AFTERNOON WITH SCATTERED SHOWERS/THUNDERSTORMS THROUGH THURSDAY MORNING.Sag, front...SAG I SAY!!!

"FOR THE HIGH HEAT INDEX VALUES...ESPECIALLY OVER THE FINGER LAKES REGION"
Great. Nice to see my neighborhood singled out this way. Let's just say that the kilns are NOT on today.

Wow - that is like an opposite snow day. Your job demands you stop working on a day that demands a cold beer so that you can have a cold beer!<p>I'd get to Buttermilk Falls if I were you.

Gah, its yucky. Yes, like in a blizzard, a person prepares, relaxes, rides it out. Like going to Borders Bookstore for the day, ostensibly to shop for cds and books...so cold you almost need a sweater.
OK, get this, Channel 10 (central NY) reports:
"After seeing the warmest overnight on record, we have another hot one on tap today. An Excessive Heat Warning remains in effect"
The warmest overnight on record! No wonder you said you felt like you spent the night hiking with a 50 lb pack!
Worst of all, the radio informs us:
Yanks move past Red Sox to first place.
Crumbs.

I have the misfortune of working in a building that my employer considers "expendable", so they shut off our air conditioning (along with several other buildings) yesterday afternoon. It was 33C (about 1000F) in my office when I got in this morning. Ugh.

Entirely co-incidently, Percy Saltzman appears to have started a blog last week! Sadly, CBC Halifax's own king of the big chalk, Rube Hornstein, left us three years ago.

I'm coping by spending as little time at home as possible. Any time that is spent at home is either out on the balcony where it's cooler or in front of the fan. This is the first time I've had to put the fan on high.
