Still we shift the goods we have bought over the course of our lives. Even on this holiday. The least holy holiday at that. It stands for nothing but a day off. Even Boxing Day alleges some Victorianesque tradition - though no one can really agree on it. It is truly just "The August Long Weekend" and celebrates the tradition of having long weekends in August and does so in fine style.
And I will celebrate it this afternoon by shopping for a sofa. Woot. As always, the Flea expresses the moment much more clearly.

Why a day off and not a WEEK? Or even a month?

Now there's an idea: Instead of agitating for a long weekend in February, we should be demanding the entire month of August off.

The Flea had an educational post about Simcoe day. Gone but not forgotten by some.
Perhaps that is a new political angle 'vote for me and everybody gets the month of August off! And a puppy!'

One of our cottage neighbours (on Simcoe Island, no less) had a fireworks show Saturday night ..

So did the guy one street over in our new burbs. That was a bit alarming.

Alberta has turned the weekend into "Heritage Day(s)" and it's a big festival in Edmonton (surprise!) where pretty much anybody seems to hoist a tent in Hawrelak Park and provide (for a price) foods from their home country. And there is dancing and singing etc etc etc
Of course, we are the province of "Family Day" in February, so what did you expect?
