Yoda might say:
The day of holiday it is.After a day entirely focused on my labours we hit the road this aft. Holiday start day is one of the best days in the calendar of one's life. Especially if you are not flying. I have never much liked flying. But I do like driving, stopping at familiar gas stations, refamiliarizing myself with overpasses, remarking interiorly "hey, there's that tree."
I do not have much of a goal this weekend and the week after when I will not toil yet not be elsewhere. I am still unclear on whether having a goal on a holiday is an asset or a shackle. It's a bit early for clam-shackin'. Maybe a ballcap with "Maine" on it.
Update-like Question: Do I dare Highway 9 through southern NH and VT or run before the wind on the Mass Turnpike again? At its eastern end, 9 is known as "the Airline" or "the Airliner" to Maritime Canadians presumably as its part ridgeline route mimicked turbulence in old prop-plane air travel.
Update on the Update-like Question:Through a very helpful and kind intermediary of my acquaint, I have received a recommendation of the highest order from the good publisher of a very famous Almanac:
It is a beautiful drive across Vermont up over Hogback Mountain. The route is much more interesting than the Mass Pike. I recommend it. It is, however, just like 101 here, two lanes, so you can get stuck behind a truck. Still I think it is well worth the risk. The route takes you through Bennington, a beautiful college town, as well as a couple of other classic Vermont small towns, ending in Brattleboro. Tell him to go for it.Sounds very good and great way to avoid the turnpike however loverly its western stretches.

that means dinner at fat boys.
portland - April 13, 2006 10:16 AM
fat boy - sorry. how could i make that mistake?
portland - April 13, 2006 10:17 AM
and, in turn, fat boy means the peanut butter soft serve at the tastee freeze next door.

Your glee makes you giddy. I need to get a picture of those sub-hunters looping over Fat Boy. That was a golden hour, eating fish sandwiches as massive sub-hunting navy planes practiced take off and landing a few hundred yards away. Wild blueberry western frappes as well. Oh, baby. The elder kid needs a pull pork at Gritty's as well. She is convinced it is the finest she has had.

Alan-rte 9 is indeed scenic and this is a good time to travel it. It is very bad: 1) when traveling through Albany and Troy, esp. at rush hours or when everybody is going to shops
2) When the weather is snowy, stay away from this road--terrible winter driving
3) leaf peepers cover it all fall, and much of the summer
4) the VT side is prettier, but the driving is a little easier through NH
Basically, today or tomorrow are probably perfect for this trip
Alan - April 13, 2006 3:59 PM
We'll do the Troy bit at 10:30 am tomorrow which should be good.
Alan - April 13, 2006 10:29 PM
As good a run to Albany as ever there was.
