Is anyone surprised that former PM Brian Mulroney had a habit of speaking rudely - or often merely firmly - about people and events? Apparently he is:
Brian Mulroney feels "devastated" and "betrayed" and regrets talking candidly to Peter C. Newman, a spokesman said yesterday after the author's tale of the tapes showed the former prime minister savaging opponents and allies alike. Luc Lavoie said that Mr. Mulroney was stunned to learn that The Secret Mulroney Tapes: Unguarded Confessions of a Prime Minister, based on his private and often R-rated reflections, would be on store shelves this week. All I ever thought about the guy was that he was a bit ripe and could be a nasty piece of work - that was part of the shock after Trudeau. Will Chretien be disappointed one day when we don't focus on his contemplative gentleness?

Ah boy - that pic of Chretien with his hands on the throat! Memories of the mean, dirty bastard!

Were two national leaders ever so misunderstood as Brian and Jean?

Hey, Jean was an asshole, but he was our asshole. Brian was an asshole, but he was their asshole, and of the two, well... Somebody pointed out to me that Brian was the only PM who knew how to talk to Americans. The US is half a shade away from thinking that we're a bunch of pinkos, and Brian knew how to make them feel like we were just one of the good old boys. (I felt a little swell of Canadian pride when I read that Nixon called Trudeau "that asshole").

Isn't that the same guy that sang with the US president, while Europe was having its umpteenth protest against Pershing missiles?

Yup. I don't know what the fuss is about as it was pretty clear he had a garbage mouth when he needed to rely on it.

I seem to recall something from the 1976 Tory convention
