Some pals and I are heading to Syracuse's Carrier Dome again in a few weeks to see the Orangemen play football so I, wearing my new SU shirt acquired yesterday, dedicated the afternoon to the first game of the year against West Virginia. It was like bad CFL. At one point in the fourth quarter the ABC sports announcers said, laughing, that it was the 14th punt of the game. There was a two point safety that put the game out of Syracuse's reach at 15-7. Six of West Virginia's points were on field goals, even they (the winners) were dispossessed five times and I even saw a "free kick" which is what NCAA football uses after the two point safety - a hand drop kick from the 20 yard played to the team which just got the two points for tackling the kicking team with the ball in the kicking team's end zone. Nothing like the application of an obscure rule to make a bad game interesting. If the Orange keep this up there will be plenty of good seats to choose from come October's planned visit.

Alan,
Shouldn't you be heading to Ibrox to see the Orangemen play football?

At least the weather was nice.
As the announcers also said, early college football games are full of mistakes because of young, inexperienced players and the fact that there have not been any practice games, such as the pros use.

Jim - there is no Billy of Orange connection at all. I was happy to quickly find this page on the University web site. And Gary is exactly right. I was mostly interested in that the poorer play devolved into CFL big field strategies. Plus the WV quarterback, the leftie, was simply superior on the day.

Correct about the new WV QB, he did pretty well. But you can see some funny things opening weekend in college football, when some underdogs who are better prepared can upset the big guys--like Oklahoma and TCU, Notre Dame and Pitt. Of course, Notre Dame is the team to watch this year, in my secular opinon, because of Charlie Weiss, the former Patriots' Offensive coach. He is sooo smart he could put ME (5'8")on the field, with Alan and a few other 40ish guys and win the Super Bowl.
Speaking of which: Patriots and Raiders Thursday night, two teams who REALLY hate each other....
