You just can't over-hype this sort of thing...
From the US National Hurricane Center:
Only 3 Category Five Hurricanes have made landfall in the United States since records began: The Labor Day Hurricane of 1935, Hurricane Camille (1969), and Hurricane Andrew in August, 1992. The 1935 Labor Day Hurricane struck the Florida Keys with a minimum pressure of 892 mb - the lowest pressure ever observed in the United States. Here is the news on Rita from 7 pm tonight:
REPEATING THE 7 PM CDT POSITION...24.5 N... 86.8 W. MOVEMENT TOWARD...WEST NEAR 13 MPH. MAXIMUM SUSTAINED WINDS...165 MPH. MINIMUM CENTRAL PRESSURE...898 MB.48 hours to landing. Ho-lee-moly. Just before making land at 4 am on Monday 29 August Katrina was at 915 mb. Hurricane Juan had about half the wind speed and was at 973 mb when it hit land near Halifax.
I wonder if anyone will try to do this?
