I thought that my nerves were supposed to have relaxed back into their normal state of repose once the Red Sox dropped away from contention and the World Series won elsewhere. But I have been flooded with anxiety soaked emails over the state of the contract of General Manager Theo Epstein. The last word from the club is this:
A day after Red Sox general manager Theo Epstein and club president/CEO Larry Lucchino had contract discussions over lunch, many Red Sox fans were hoping they'd get to dessert, i.e., the finalization of a new deal for Epstein. However, while there are indications that the sides have made considerable progress the past couple of days with regard to the re-signing of Epstein, a Red Sox club official indicated that no announcement was expected by the close of business on Friday. Another team official said that even if an agreement was struck this weekend, it likely wouldn't be announced until Monday.Curt Shilling, like me a recovering star athlete just on a shorter curve, has spoken up in favour of resigning the GM in a somewhat odd way:
“I think the most important thing for me is Theo’s a good person first and foremost and I think that has a lot to with it,” he said. “He’s not deceitful, at least not with me, and I think if the situation called for it, he could be. But he’s an honest guy. He’s a good guy...Kinda...maybe...I guess...
The good news is that Manny is asking to be traded so things are not as far from where they usually are as you might think.
