Not being a partaker, this news is of theoretical interest only:
Forget the stereotype about dopey potheads. It seems marijuana could be good for your brain. While other studies have shown that periodic use of marijuana can cause memory loss and impair learning and a host of other health problems down the road, new research suggests the drug could have some benefits when administered regularly in a highly potent form. Most "drugs of abuse" such as alcohol, heroin, cocaine and nicotine suppress growth of new brain cells. However, researchers found that cannabinoids promoted generation of new neurons in rats' hippocampuses. The "reefer madness" school of hysteria has never made much sense to me as the folk I knew from time to time who were users were among some of the brighter thinkers in the group. Maybe it was all their new neurons.

I've a friend who smokes pot regularly and his memory's much better than mine. I'm tempted to see if it'll improve mine, but my last experience with it was unpleasant, so I don't dare. Plus he mixes it with tobacco and I quit smoking 5 years ago and really don't want to go through that hell again.
