Chicago is simply too good. Oswalt did not have his magic and had one ugly fifth inning when the Fox announcers went on and on about him missing a beanball, loosing his cool and walking the man with no outs and another on second already - even though that man would have gotten to first on being hit the same as being walked. I think I know why this is happening. Ozzie was an Expo. Consider this note in the baseball calendar from July 17th 2001:
Expos coach Ozzie Guillen is thrown out before 1st pitch is thrown out, continuing an argument from last night with ump Greg Gibson. The Expos then pound Boston's Tim Wakefield to beat the visiting Red Sox, 117. Five homers are hit in the game, including a 457-foot shot by Vladimir Guerrero.I have this sense that there is a lot of extra mojo floating around the universe unspent and pent up from the failure of the Expos to ever make it to the World Series though it was their right and the destiny. The Chisox have grabbed some. That is clearly what is up.
Stephen Dunn of Getty Images above neatly tells the sad tale of the scoreboard. All the zeros before the end. It would have been better if the longest game in World Series history had made it 2-1 and not 3-0 for Chicago. It makes you wonder why bother with game four tonight. But then again...

Ozzie was also with the White Sox for most of his career, speaking of history. Two more points:
1) The White Sox have fielded good and great teams for years, but have not made it this far because of the old Black Sox thing, you know, the Eight Men Out gambling curse. Their owner, if I remember correctly, also owns the Chicago Bulls (remember them?). This guy has some very deep pockets, like the Yanks, so you know it has been a very big curse holding them back, because their payroll has been pretty high up there.
2) Big Frank Thomas, the best player you havn't spent much time thinking about, has spent all his long career with the WS. This should be his big moment, but he is inactive right now....makes a good man want to cry.

why watch 4? because this is some of the best baseball i've ever seen. great great games. ozzie is genius, a real baseball character. go go white sox. and the manager over on the other side bears the nick name "scrap iron." i'm loving it. now having said that i have to admit that i fell asleep before the end of the game last night (10th). woe is me. that never happens, but it did last night. damn.
and one last thing cassandra, last night's winning home run by geoff blum....... yup, you got it, blum is very fondly remembered by us expo afficiandos for some fine seasons, more than a few big clutch at-bats. we'll only be truly vindicated though when bud selig and that pimp who owns the marlins (loria) fall into an abandoned well.

If I am Cassandra, can I call you Phylis?

Mojo! I think the damn Canadiens took that from the Expos, with a spoonful left over for the Nationals in DC.
Speaking of hockey, as always, whassup w/ the northeast division? Some great teams playing in there right now.

Just 'cause I went to Kings doesn't mean I remembered any of the greek and roman stuff. I remember Angus Johnson's class on mythology was like Wednesday from 4:30 to 6:30 Wednesdays and that was hitting one of the prime happy hour times...and just two floors down, too. People growing out of each other's heads, making babies with swans. It was all a bit unnerving.

kings smings, you all got a high opinion of yourselves. can't think of another institution of higher learning that fucked up so many people's lives. of course, that might have just been the crowd i was hanging out with. who knows?
on mythology:
if i were sophocles, brave with truth
writhing in the darnkess of humanity
bright with an occluded brightness
able to hold in total mind
the fantastic reality of the human condition
i wonder what i would have done
about a world beyonf the greek
for he know the zenith and nadir
of passion, and he know that beyond reality
was the other passion of mythology
that myths were as sensual as tears or dreams
the stains of error in the habit of truth
leaning beyond the flesh to the strength of the gods.
