I have never had a computer crash. I don't know why. Clear living perhaps. But I am always concerned when I read stories like Craig's because I would never be able to deal with the sorts of instructions he gives to revive the dang thing. His list clearly leaves out actions I would take like screaming and crying.
Lately, I have this fear that the crash is coming. This black box in front of me is doing things like chugging slowly and even telling me it is locked even though a reboot makes that go away. Trouble with the evil virus gods, however, is that I really do not have much on the computer anymore that is vital. Stuff is either stored on other computers, on the blog's admin or at yahoo groups or in my gmail. My computer really is a terminal for the same tools I have always had except they are web-based. If we all had that sort of relation to the computer would there be any point to viruses?

Al, I chose to leave out the screaming and cursing and wondering how herself and I would be keeping in touch while I wizzed off to Oz.
Pick up 'spybot, search and destroy' and keep your virus sigs up to date. Run a router/firewall.
Perhaps the most important thing (for me), as I hate web mail interface thingys, is to use an intervening host to filter out junk, viruses and trojans.. I use spammarrest, and I love it. It does, however, require a little work, and thus I am not using it on Herself's system.

I do those two things, the search and destroy and firewall. But, even though they tell me the computer is clean, they are like praying to the great cow-headed god to me. Magic I do not understand.

A cow-headed god can be as good as most other things, Al. As I heard Prime Minister Howard speaking of a 'valid and credible' terrorist threat to Oz, I was thinking a prayer to old cow-head migh not be a bad thing.
