The first blockbuster trade of the off-season? The Boston Herald reports:
Nearly two years after acquiring Curt Schilling from the Arizona Diamondbacks, the Red Sox are on the verge of getting another overpowering right-hander to bolster their starting rotation. And this one is just 25 years old. According to baseball sources, the Sox and Florida Marlins have agreed in principle on a deal that would bring Josh Beckett and third baseman Mike Lowell to Boston for prized shortstop prospect Hanley Ramirez and minor league right-handers Anibal Sanchez and Jesus Delgado. Sources indicated there still are some details to address, primarily concerning the health of centerpiece Beckett.I have no baseball sources of my own so all I can do is repeat what I read - but what do you expect? You're reading a blog ain't ya?
Here are Beckett's stats. 2003 World Series MVP. I am concerned that on August 23rd he gave up 8 runs to Milwaulkie. Lowell had one bad year after three previous .500 range slugging seasons. Third base. Too bad his name isn't pronounced something like "Miller" - maybe it is. 2005 Golve Glover. The name that is always in the trade as leaving Boston is shortstop Hanley Ramirez who played 122 for the Portland Seadogs. Casco and portland will know more.
I sure hope this doesn't trigger a trade request from Manny.

I had hoped Delgado would work out better, I think he had/has tremendous potential--but I think there was an arm injury a year or two ago. It might be a good move letting him go. You have to wonder about sports careers sometimes: one injury and you go from hot prospect worth millions to pushing a broom or flipping burgers.

Great, just what the rest of the AL needs. The Yankees and the Red Sox trying to suck up all the good available starting pitching. I swear, boston and ny are like Darth Vader and Emporere Palpatine.

three young stud pitchers, plus wake and arroyo. now if we could just unload shilling for pitching. well, okay, pitching that i could care about. forgive me, he's just boring is all. yabber yabber yabber jesus. yabber yabber yabber george bush. yabber yabber yabber don't come near me on game day, i'm soooooo intense. oh man, i miss pedro.
but seriously, i love the trade. it takes a lot of pressure off clement. maybe that look in his eyes that scares me so when he has men on second will lessen just a little bit. if j. paplebaum (sp) is what half what he was last season, it's a devestating 1-2.
it means youk is our first baseman. can he catch? not known for his glove but he made himself into a pretty servicable third baseman in the past two years so maybe he'll have a wade boggs type of trajectory on defence. i hope so. i can't stand much more of nobody being able to dig out the low throw. it's killing me slowly. i was not pulling for delgado for precisely that reason.
plus beck only goes for two mill per year for the next two years. cool.
i'm a gonna miss mueller a lot but i was going to miss him anyway. i'll give the new guy a chance. can he catch? yeah, if we believe his press. that's good at least.
as for hanely, c'mon, one. the kid was a headcase waiting to happen (see h. ramariez - tantrums), has yet to live up to his billing (.273 at double A?), and there's something fishy there at any rate if you consider that they're gave renteria so much money. last i checked the marlins kind of had a shortstop too. what's up with that? nope, we got pitching for pitching and gave up a kid we didn't need. i love the trade even if hanley proves to be the next coming in five years.
yeah baby. yeah.

I so wanted to kill the Cubs managment when they let Clement go to the Red Sox. What were they thinking? Oh, and sticking the Cubs with No-play-mar Garciapara, smart, but angering just the same.
And yes, the Angels are still looking for revenge from 1986(can we win the AL on a Buckner-esque play at first? Oh please, oh please, oh please). Watch 'yer backs.

Good Boston Herald article this morning on what to do now. I like the Olerud resign particularly in case Youk is no good at first.

Boston Globe mentions above a potentially sweet trade with Texas for Gonzalez at first, who has some good numbers in AAA.
The Toronto Star asks 'when did the Red Sox become the Yankees?'. I mean, ouch! Is it time to 'blame Canada' and send the nukes north?
