Darcy at Dust My Broom has been doing what I wish more blogs did - highlight a story and follow it. Canada is a big place and the events in one community in Saskatchewan simply do not make it to the rest of the land. This story from the CBC Sask. sums up recent events:
Members of the Poundmaker First Nation near Battleford are protesting what they are calling voting irregularities in the last band election. The protesters, calling themselves the Poundmaker working group, say the election of Chief Ted Antoine was marred by irregularities and they want new leadership. These sorts of allegations have been raised before and, except for the specific claims in relation to Indian Act rules of governance, are in no way unique to First Nation communities in Canada...though, by comparison and to our shame and that of the media, when irregularities are found in communities governed by municipal statutes at the provincial level our minds and the media do not click to lumping all Europeans together as part of the tale in quite the same way.
Average folk taking a stand against what they see as wrong, sadly, is somewhat unique but when it happens like at Poundmaker should be admired. I will be watching now that Darcy has brought it to our attention.
