Mike reminds me of a happier younger time in life when I would bicycle home for a late Saturday lunch and a little wrasslin' on the TV. I have mentioned Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling before and provided a link to the story. Mike, however, has found a page with the bios of the wrestlers including my favorite, the Cuban Assassin.
I remember my Grandpa coming from Scotland in the early 70s, him being riveted to the small black and white when it was on as many of the same wrestlers were on the UK circuit, me getting a pat on the shoulder from Papa Dobie as he sipped milky tea telling me which moves to look for from each man in the ring, him screwing up his face like he was eating a lemon when the piledriver came into play.

Ahh, the piledriver ... "... banned in some states, should be banned in all!"
My heroes (?) were Killer Kowalski and " ... the very capable Kenny Jay!". Who wasn't. Capable, I mean. The man still has never once won a wrestling match. He was the Washington Generals of wrestling. But I used to cheer for him.

I don't think I saw Killer Carl Krupe on that list. He was very bad man.
portland - March 23, 2005 11:33 AM
that link is so so sweet. thanks.
mark - March 23, 2005 1:34 PM
finally your blog has given me useful information. My favorite was/is "Big" Stephen Petipas.
Nils Ling - March 23, 2005 1:43 PM
Alan ... Killer Karl Krup was featured prominently in Mike's post ... and on the link to the History site ...
Yes, he was bad. Now, Whipper Billy Watson ... pronounced as one word, by the way (Whipperbilly) ... THERE was a hero.
Alan - March 23, 2005 2:02 PM
I may be blind but I am a hell of a lot prettier than Killer Karl Krup.

The site he links to errs, or at least Mike's interpretation does. Atlantic Grand Prix may have lost talent to the WWF/WWE but it stayed in business. I went to one of their live shows in Charlottetown in the summer of 2001. They're still alive and kicking as far as I know and the Cuban Assasin's son is now his partner- Cuban Assasin #2. Classic.

I fondly remember seeing sweet daddy siki perform live at ....yes the mighty memorial Centre in Kingston in 1986 and yes after the show Queen's engineering students jumped into the ring as you would expect...they are so funny that way
Mike - March 23, 2005 3:52 PM
Hmm, maybe he just snatched up the contracts and it carried on. ?? No idea.
Mike - March 23, 2005 3:56 PM
... trying to remember ... was Killer Karl's big move The Claw or something? He would dig his big mit into his opponent's midsection and hang on until the other guy either submitted or smashed him in the head?
Alan - March 23, 2005 4:17 PM
From his bio page through the link above:

The cation reads: "Eye Claw Master Karl Von Krupp".
Very. Bad. Man.
Gooner - March 23, 2005 6:30 PM
I remember him calling it the Iron Claw. I'm more of a No Class Bobby Bass man myself.

on that pic alone he should be rated the best wrestler anywhere ever. moncton should erect a statue. he beat up on leo burke and the beast swore revenge - remember? oh my god, those were heady days. was it was on after the hockey game....am i making that up? was it sunday mornings? and yeah yeah yeah, the claw - sometimes i dream about it and wake up screaming. killer karl krupe (that's how it should be spelled - it was pronounced that way, in truro at least). awww man, he was great and, yes, very very bad. are you tired of this chestnut (the way i am your billy bragg story) - there was this night when i was at the a&w and i looked over and there in the car next to me were the beast and the cuban assassin having teen burgers. i swear it's true. i went in and got mitchell out of the kitchen to be my witness. of course, mitchell being mitchell, he had no idea who the beast and the cuban assassin even were. i invented that phone that takes pictures that night......but i never got around to making it and somebody else got rich 30 years later. typical. and what about don leo johnathon? anybody remember him? i saw him win a battle royal at the rink in truro one summer. they ganged up on him (even the midgets) and they still couldn't get him out of the ring. it was beautiful.
can we talk about skinny minnie millar now? i love this stuff. who went to the hell riders down at the race track when they came to town? entertainment was entertainment then. disney on ice has ruined everything.
portland - March 23, 2005 11:38 PM
hey i clecked on your mike link (hi mike) and he does mention skinny minnie millar. i didnt know about the bay city bombers. i saw her when she skated for the canadian national roller derby team. they came to town about four times a year and they only played the milwaulkie (sp -sic))bucks. and they always won! wow. there was another girl who was big for them. her billing was Canada's sweetheart. but skinnie minnie was better. "here comes skinny minnie millar," i say to my wife and kid all the time apropo of nothing. now, roller derby, there was a sport.

portland - March 24, 2005 9:09 AM

So nice to know I didn't dream it...though I did dream about Leapin' Lanny. I'm afraid to look at the site in case he isn't as hot as I imagine him to have been.
Then again, given that he doesn't appear on the list, maybe I did dream it.

My favorite ATlantic Grand Prix Wrestler was the Late Bulldog Bob Brown.
Then there was the Beast, The Stomper, and Kurrgan
Just Me - July 3, 2005 3:21 PM
I am looking for a former GPW by the name of Sunny Two Rivers. He wrestled about 7 years ago he would be in his mid 30's.

My son is into todays wrestling and I thought on no this is terrible. But then memories came runnig back from my early teens.. It has been great being able to show and tell him about the wrestlers i use to watch on saturdays. Most rural areas of the maritimes only got 2 TV channels so we all watched it.I started talking about it at work and all the names came back Sweet Daddy Siki, Killar Karl Krupp, Leo Burke etc...Thanks for enhancing my memories.
adam - January 10, 2006 10:39 PM
yes!!!
grand prix wrestling still remains in business in the maritimes.there is another company to make its way into the maritimes officialccw.com is the address the company is called canadian championship wrestling.but the question is who has the best talent? grand prix or canadian championship wrestling?grand prix has such talent as: rene's brother jeff dupre(and jeff is only getting fame by the shadow of his brother)while canadian championship wrestling has such talent as: the cuban assassin syd savage, among other former wwf star such as names like, demoltion ax,warlord , barbarian and others to come!but you do have to repect grand prix and what is done over the years with professional wrestling in the maritimes but isnt it time for a new promotion to bring in more talent and more excitment?
we hope that canadian championship wrestling will be a success and there is tons of surprises and GREAT talent to come to the maritimes that you will not BELIEVE so visit the website and sign up and post questions and whole lot more the website is OFFICIALCCW.COM
Alan - January 10, 2006 10:54 PM
Topical spam. How nice.
wrestlemark - January 10, 2006 10:56 PM
THE CCW WEBSITE ROCKS!!!!!
it is well kept up to date and well designed.no other wrestling company has such great information about the world of pro wrestling .
i do believe that they will run every other maritime company into the ground and make a big impact on the year of 2006.
the web designers are fantastic at the work...you can find the web designers info on the ccw website who ever wants a site done its something stcfx

Anybody remember another local wrestler called "goofie newfie" or something like that...he also had the words "scrap iron" written on his pant leg. We gave the nickname "scrap iron" to a local guy we grew up with but was trying to remember the wrestlers name. I loved all the old matches and all the people got so excited, much better rivalries than the WWF and just a great laugh. I would love to be able to locate video footage of the matches and the interviews with "Mr. Mc Cluck Cluck"
