I understand in a few weeks I will be spending a Saturday laying on the sofa for social justice watching Live 8. That is good. I have laid around on the sofa for far worse reasons and I need a good lecturing/hectoring on how I am not pulling my weight. I know I do so don't even start. But I wonder what it will really be like. Will it be like...
[Ed.: At this point imagine an impossible in HTML dream-scene, wavey screen and all...]
...Live Aid? The thing I most clearly recall from that long day huddled around a tiny black and white TV, other than the general lack of clarity amongst my confreres if you know what I mean, was the Led Zep reunion and Jimmy Page abolutely blotto in guitar, a sheet of foamy saliva pouring out his gob, Phil Collins sitting on on drums wavering between amusement and disgust. There was also the unexpected debute by Tracy Chapman and...ummm...what else? Wasn't there the spectacle of pre-Guns 'n' Roses heavy metal on my TV as well? Then...ummm... about eight we headed down town.
[Ed.: dream sequence over]
I suppose I am just Oldie Olson as I find the line-up lame. No Franz Ferdinand, The Darkness, White Stripes, any heavy metal, no Green Day or punk. Yet we get both Paul McCartney and Mariah Cary. Yikes. There isn't even a reunion by The Who and they hold a reunion ever other month. Given they were the best thing on The Concert for New York, the last mega-band mega-concert, you would think they would be asked.
So I many not have the same sort of day I had in 1985 but I bet I won't bother laying on the sofa all day either.

My memories of Live Aid are: Queen, Queen and Queen. And Queen.
And being appalled at how bad Zeppelin + Phil was. (So legendarily bad, that they refused to give their permission to be included on the DVD and gave a crapload of money to charity instead.)
