One of the largest freighters on the Great Lakes ran aground less than a kilometre from the Thousand Islands Bridge near Gananoque yesterday afternoon. The Canada Steamship Lines vessel Niagara, a 222-metre-long bulk carrier, lost control of its steering while approaching the American Narrows stretch of the St. Lawrence Seaway, near Alexandria Bay, just after 1 p.m. It ran aground off St. Helena Island, a small island just east of the southern span of the international bridge. It is interesting to note that the ship is longer than the gap it was trying to get through is wide. In a way, I am amazed that this is not a more common event - keeping in mind that this view includes the river being traversed by these lakers.

I spent half a dozen years in Kingston. I LOVE the pictures that you post from the area. Thanks.

Hey, that is great. I wish more bloggers were shutter bugs without needing to formally become "photobloggers". Just to be clear, though, I nicked the one above from the Whig. I have a no helicopter rental policy.
